II. The Fire Burns
Overview
Gabriel and Dior search Cairnhaem and find no living master, but they uncover a hidden Esani chapel marked by the Grail and a damaged second half of the prophecy. The discovery confirms that Jènoah held crucial knowledge but died by suicide after killing those under his care, leaving the answers broken and incomplete.
The chapter deepens Gabriel and Dior’s bond through anger, apology, humor, and an accidental fatherly acknowledgment, while the approaching Voss Terrors keep the danger immediate. Dior’s frustration finally forces Celene to stop speaking in riddles and agree to reveal what she knows.
Summary
Inside the abandoned château of Cairnhaem, Gabriel and Dior search for answers while Celene withdraws alone and Phoebe slips back into the storm to watch for the pursuing Ironhearts. The rooms are ancient, dusty, and full of ashes, with rusted weapons, empty halls, and religious writing, but no immediate explanation of Dior’s destiny or the Esani.
Dior tries to amuse herself with echoes, and Gabriel snaps at her because he fears the Voss Terrors will attack after sunset and believes coming to Cairnhaem may have been a fatal mistake. Ashdrinker quietly rebukes Gabriel, reminding him that Dior’s joy is a strength, so Gabriel apologizes in his own crude way and restores their warmth through shared joking.
As Gabriel and Dior continue searching, Dior asks why Alba and Aléne Voss are called the Terrors. Gabriel recounts the fall of Lucía, where the twins manipulated civilians into murdering one another inside a cathedral before slaughtering everyone once the holy ground was profaned. The story clarifies the nature of the threat pursuing Dior.
Gabriel and Dior find a vast wardrobe and briefly take comfort in replacing their ruined clothes with fine garments. Gabriel hides a vial of his blood in Dior’s new coat so he can track Dior if they are separated, and Dior accidentally calls Gabriel “Papa,” creating a brief, emotionally loaded silence before they resume their search.
On Cairnhaem’s upper level, Gabriel and Dior discover bronze doors bearing the sigil of Blood Esani and the words “Judgment Comes.” Gabriel notices the negative space in the sigil forms the Grail. Beyond the doors is a chapel with a circular altar, a Redeemer statue, a relief of vampire armies at war, and a stone book bearing the known prophecy on one side and a shattered second stanza on the other. Dior makes out the surviving line, “This blackened veil shall be undone,” suggesting the missing half of the prophecy may explain how to end the endless night.
Celene is already kneeling in the chapel before a man-shaped burn and old blood writing. Weeping bloody tears, Celene reveals that Master Jènoah killed his servants and liathe before taking his own life because he could no longer bear his burden. When Celene suggests another Esana, Mother Maryn, may be found beneath Dún Maergenn, Dior erupts in anger and demands the truth Celene has withheld. Under Dior’s pressure, Celene finally agrees to tell Gabriel and Dior what Celene knows.
