II. Something to Believe In
Overview
Dior begins turning captivity into resistance by recruiting Joaquin and confirming that her blood can free Lilidh’s thralls. Reyne reveals a hidden network beneath Dún Maergenn, introduces three liberated Maergenn swordmaids, and helps Dior build a cautious plan to spread freedom through trusted allies.
The chapter shifts the story from survival to organized revolt while deepening Dior and Reyne’s bond. It also introduces two major mysteries: Dior’s blood can move of its own accord, and the Grail’s sigil appears beneath the Mothermaid’s tomb beside the Esana symbol.
Summary
Dior remains trapped in Dún Maergenn, pretending to be Lilidh’s obedient thrall while days pass without word from Reyne. The city’s danger grows because the Voss legions are approaching, Nikita may be forced to surrender Dior to Fabién Voss, and even a freed castle would still face both highbloods and the Ironhearts. Unable to wait, Dior uses the authority of Lilidh’s brand to move through the keep and seek allies.
Dior goes to the stables and dismisses the workers so she can speak privately with Joaquin Marenn. Dior reveals that Joaquin has been free of Kiara’s thralldom since Dior healed him in the woods, and Joaquin admits he has not fled because Isla, the girl he loves, remains trapped in Nikita’s chambers. When Dior promises that Isla is alive and that Dior’s blood can free others, Joaquin agrees to help the coming revolt if Isla can be saved.
On the way back through the courtyard, Dior sees Mila imprisoned in the cages and is forced to pass without speaking, knowing any open promise could expose the conspiracy. Reyne then appears and silently leads Dior through hidden passages beneath the keep and toward the ruined Sepulcher of the Mothermaid. Because the crypt is holy ground, the vampire mote watching through Dior’s choker cannot enter, and Dior goes on without it.
Inside the crypt beneath the Mothermaid’s tomb, Dior meets Reyne’s newly freed allies: Arlynn, Gillian, and Morgana, Maergenn swordmaids who had been serving as thralls. Reyne explains that Dior’s blood in their morning meal broke Lilidh’s control. The group debates how to free the keep without being discovered; mass dosing is too risky, so Reyne decides they must free trusted people slowly, beginning with loved ones and loyal blades. Dior argues that the Dead’s mutual hatred is their weakness, and that Nikita’s court can be broken by exploiting the fragile ties holding it together.
Dior cuts her foot to fill small vessels with blood for the swordmaids to carry, and Reyne orders them to share it only in secret. After the others leave, Reyne and Dior speak more personally about leadership, ancestry, Niamh á Maergenn, and the clothes Dior has been wearing. Their guarded warmth deepens, and Reyne promises that Dior will one day wear armor rather than finery.
When Dior cauterizes the wound, her spilled blood moves by itself, gathering away from the heated blade as if reacting to her pain. Neither Dior nor Reyne understands what this means, and Dior leaves to consult her hidden companion. After they depart, the watching mote notices a familiar symbol in the crypt’s mosaic: the twin skulls of the Esana and, between them, the sigil of the Grail.
