Chapter Twenty-Eight

Overview

Valeria arrives with grave news that Antoine has died under torture, forcing Apollo and Frey to reassess Franka’s role in their larger political trap. Instead of withdrawing, Franka now presses forward out of vengeance and to protect Kristian, which keeps the dangerous plan in motion.

At the same time, Apollo begins repairing the damage inside his own household: he gently explains part of his family history to Christophe, reassures him about Maddie, and then helps Maddie recover from Franka’s emotional blows by sharing his past and affirming her worth. The chapter matters because it strengthens Apollo’s family bonds just as outside threats escalate.

Summary

After Maddie leaves Karsvall for the dower house with Achilles, Apollo prepares to deal with Christophe, but Valeria Drakkar arrives unexpectedly. Apollo receives her coldly, summons Frey, and also orders his staff warned after learning servants gossiped about his family within Christophe’s hearing. In Apollo’s study, Valeria needles Apollo about bringing Maddie to the Bitter Gales and hints that society is speaking cruelly about her.

When Frey joins them, Valeria finally delivers the real message: Antoine has died after prolonged torture at the enemy’s hands. She explains that Franka witnessed his death through the mirror during negotiations. Because Antoine is gone, the enemy no longer holds that leverage over Franka, but Franka still continues the plan because Kristian and his family remain imprisoned, and because she now wants vengeance. Apollo and Frey conclude that Franka is likely still acting in earnest, since if she had betrayed them she would have altered the trap rather than urge them to proceed quickly.

After Frey returns to deal with his mother, Apollo goes to Christophe. Apollo confirms that servants spoke about his grandfather’s old choices and explains, in terms Christophe can bear, that Apollo’s father chose wrongly, that Auntie Lynne was his true mother, and that Lady Patience never mistreated him even if she stayed distant. Apollo turns the painful conversation into guidance about careless speech, reassures Christophe that Maddie is not being sent away, and admits both that Maddie had been hurt and that Apollo himself behaved badly. Seeing Christophe soften, Apollo ends the talk by taking his son outside to practice swords in the dark with torches.

Later, after putting both children to bed, Apollo rides to the dower house. Cristiana’s cool reception makes it clear Maddie’s household has not forgotten how Apollo wounded her. Apollo finds Maddie staring out the window, still troubled by the revelations about his family and by Franka’s earlier cruelty. He tells her the fuller history: his father’s arranged marriage, Lady Patience’s inability to bear an heir, his father’s keeping Apollo’s mother nearby as his lover, Apollo’s divided childhood between them, and why Maddie’s stay in that house troubles him. He also explains that Maddie must remain there for Christophe’s sake until Christophe feels secure.

Maddie then admits that Franka’s words still shook her because she does not know what she is worth. Apollo answers by naming her qualities, insisting that she needs to be nothing but herself, and telling her that her heart is enough for him. Maddie finally comes to him, feels herself no longer broken, and tells Apollo she loves him. In bed afterward, Maddie laughs as she realizes Apollo has given her not only comfort, beauty, and love, but her own sense of self back. Apollo accepts that truth with tenderness, and the chapter ends with the two of them reaffirming their intimacy and emotional healing.
