Chapter Nineteen
Overview
At the Brunskar gale, Madeleine enters the heart of Drakkar territory and quickly sees that Apollo and Draven were right to treat the family as dangerous. Apollo uses the event to monitor suspected conspirators while his men secretly search their rooms, revealing that the gala is part social ritual and part covert investigation. When Franka Drakkar tries to unsettle her, Madeleine stands her ground so effectively that Apollo sees she can survive the vipers’ intrigue instead of merely being protected from it.
Summary
As Madeleine finishes dressing for the Brunskar gale, 0lan excitedly praises her, Chris reacts with unusual unease, and Meeta silently signals a warning that leaves Madeleine unsettled. Apollo is visibly affected by Madeleine’s appearance, but before they leave he again stresses safety: his men will stay close, Madeleine must remain in his sight, and the danger of being in Brunskar is real. During the sleigh ride, Apollo praises her beauty, confirms he will keep her from being forced to dance, and deliberately heightens her caution by implying the night may exact a cost.
At the gale, Madeleine quickly learns how deeply House identity shapes the gathering and how sinister the Drakkar castle feels in black and blood-red decor. Apollo introduces her to Calder Drakkar and his wife Melba, then to Garik Drakkar, who all react with brief shock to Madeleine’s resemblance to Ilsa. Afterward, Apollo points out the Drakkars he most distrusts: Kristian, Eirik, Valeria, and especially Franka, whose gaze immediately marks her as dangerous. Because Apollo does not want Madeleine beside him while he speaks to Eirik and Valeria, he leaves her under the protection of Norfolk Ravenscroft near the food tables.
Norfolk soon tries to move Madeleine away when Franka approaches, but Madeleine stays put and faces her. Franka probes at Madeleine’s resemblance to Ilsa and at Apollo’s interest in her, clearly trying to provoke and unsettle her. Instead of retreating, Madeleine answers sharply, calls Franka obvious and disappointing, and makes clear that Apollo is watching and will not tolerate threats against her. Norfolk backs Madeleine, warning Franka that she has challenged someone protected by a far more dangerous ally, and Franka finally withdraws. Apollo witnesses enough to understand what happened and is openly pleased that Madeleine handled Franka so effectively.
Once they are alone again, Apollo explains the real purpose of the evening: while he watches the suspect Drakkars socially, Remi and Hans are using the gala as cover to locate and search the rooms of Franka, Kristian, Eirik, and Valeria for evidence of conspiracy. Madeleine agrees to help by keeping watch on Franka and Kristian while Apollo tracks Eirik and Valeria. The chapter closes with Apollo both admiring Madeleine’s poise in a hostile environment and promising more intimate rewards later, before he resumes introducing her to trusted allies such as Walter Sinclair.
