Epilogue

Overview

The epilogue closes the novel by explaining how Valentine, Derrik, Franka, and the women’s awakened magic helped defeat the final trap on Specter Isle. Maddie then marries Apollo, fully claiming her place in Lunwyn and in House Ulfr. Time jumps forward to show their settled happiness: Maddie becomes a beloved mother to Christophe and Elan, gives birth to daughter Valentine and later son Aether, and Apollo recognizes that he has finally brought light and safety into Maddie’s life.

Summary

In the aftermath of the attack on the Winter Palace, the postponed Bitter Gales leave everyone shaken, and Apollo gathers allies to debrief. Derrik explains that he infiltrated Specter Isle by pretending to betray Apollo so he could act from inside the enemy camp, and Maddie confirms that Derrik helped neutralize Helda during the rescue. Valentine then reveals she had secretly prepared a backup plan: Maddie, Finnie, and Cora unknowingly helped break the enchantment on Specter Isle through love and latent female magic, Circe channeled that power, Franka was sent in as a diversion, and Noc’s arrival made it safe for the others to enter. Maddie thanks Franka despite Franka’s cold response, Lavinia confirms she has recovered after being resurrected, and Apollo accepts that the hidden plan helped save them.

A week later, Maddie prepares to marry Apollo in the Dwelling of the Gods. Finnie, Circe, and Cora each provide Maddie with something borrowed, old, and new, while Valentine magically supplies the something blue: a necklace of Sjofn diamonds that once came from a bag Apollo had given her as payment and hope. Valentine tells Maddie that the diamonds were always truly hers and that love is worth every wound and battle. Supported by her friends, Meeta, Loretta, Achilles, and Derrik, Maddie walks into the ceremony, sees Apollo waiting for her, and remains focused only on him through the long ritual. Before Apollo kisses her at the end, Maddie asks him to remember the kiss, and Apollo promises that he always will.

Six months later, the point of view shifts to Apollo. After finishing business, Apollo enters the great room and finds a peaceful domestic scene that proves how fully his life has changed: Elan proudly announces that she and Maddie baked cookies, Christophe and Maddie work together to beat Achilles at ricken, and Apollo sees Maddie resting a hand on her pregnant belly while laughing with his children and household. That sight overwhelms Apollo because Maddie is no longer trapped in darkness or despair; she is safe, loved, and at home. Apollo joins them with Elan on his lap and listens to his family’s laughter with deep contentment.

In Maddie’s later point of view, she reflects on letters from Finnie, Circe, and Cora about their growing families and on how fully she belongs in this world. At their country house in Fleuridia, Maddie sends Christophe and Elan back to school with Apollo, cherishing the trust and affection she shares with both children and with her husband. After they leave, Maddie thinks about missing Loretta and Meeta, then goes to the nursery and finds her sleeping daughter, Valentine. In the crib is a note from Valentine the witch, along with Fritos, pens, and a green satin pouch. The note says Apollo wanted Maddie to have the snacks and pens, while the pouch is Valentine’s own gift; she also hints that Noc may soon face a romantic challenge of his own. When Maddie opens the pouch and smells peppermint, vanilla, and licorice, she recognizes another magical possibility and smiles.

In the final intimate scene, Maddie and Apollo lie together after making love, and Maddie studies the difference between Apollo’s first painful look and the tenderness he now gives her. Each recognizes that the other has helped heal old wounds and create lasting happiness. When Maddie asks for more, Apollo responds with the same generosity and passion that define their bond. The epilogue closes by revealing that nine months later Apollo gives Maddie even more when their son, Aether, is born, completing the family they built together.
