Annabeth, exhausted and in severe pain with a broken ankle, faces Arachne in the cavern beneath the Athena Parthenos. Realizing she cannot fight or flee, she shifts to strategy, engaging the spider through flattery and curiosity about Arachne’s tapestries to stall for time.

Annabeth proposes that Arachne’s work deserves display on Mount Olympus, claiming she can act as an agent to secure a grand exhibition and spark divine rivalry. She reinforces the offer by sharing her strained history with Athena, convincing Arachne that revenge through recognition would be sweeter than a simple kill.

During their exchange, Arachne reveals the peril of their location: the chamber’s foundations are eaten away, and only Arachne’s webbing prevents a deadly fall straight to Tartarus. Annabeth feigns reluctance, then dangles a difficult “audition piece” as the price for Olympus—insisting it must surpass anything Arachne has made.

Using Daedalus’s laptop and a 3-D model inspired by Frank’s advice to keep it simple, Annabeth outlines a massive braided cylindrical sculpture requiring huge quantities of spider silk. She claims Athena deemed such a structure impossible, provoking Arachne’s pride and need to prove superiority.

To gather enough silk, Annabeth urges dismantling the webbing wrapped around the Athena Parthenos, warning Arachne to leave just enough threads to keep the chamber intact. Hooked by the challenge and promise of glory, Arachne agrees and begins unraveling the statue to start the colossal weave, inadvertently weakening her own support net above Tartarus while Annabeth waits as “hostage.”
