Summary
Black water surges into the buried Roman nymphaeum, climbing to Piper McLean’s waist. Facing drowning, Piper grasps at a memory Achelous once referenced—the Cherokee flood story her father used to tell in Malibu.
In the remembered tale, a man’s dog warns of an imminent flood, demanding sacrifice: throw the dog into the lake and build a raft. When the man checks the dog’s scruff, he finds only bones—a skeleton dog already dead. Heartbroken, the man sacrifices the dog, builds a raft, and his family alone survives.
After the waters recede in the story, the man hears laughter and dancing, only to find a valley of skeletons—the ghosts of the drowned. As a child, Piper hated the tale’s unresolved ending and the dog’s loss. Now, with the nymphaeum filling and Achelous’s mention echoing, Piper recognizes its theme of necessary sacrifice.
