CHAPTER ELEVEN
Overview
Ralph leads Piggy and Samneric to Castle Rock to demand Piggy’s stolen glasses and the return to signal fire. Diplomacy collapses into violence as Jack defies Ralph’s authority. Roger releases a boulder that kills Piggy and destroys the conch, ending order. Jack asserts absolute rule, captures Samneric, and drives Ralph into the forest.
Summary
At dawn, Ralph, Piggy, and Samneric discover their fire is dead and accept that Jack’s tribe stole Piggy’s glasses. Piggy insists on confronting Jack with the conch to demand what is rightfully his and to restore a signal fire. They decide to go unpainted, clinging to the idea of rescue and rules.
They march to Castle Rock. Ralph blows the conch and calls an assembly, facing painted guards. Jack arrives from hunting with a slaughtered sow behind him. Ralph accuses Jack of theft; a spear-fight flares, then pauses as Piggy reminds Ralph of their purpose: the glasses and the signal fire.
Ralph argues that rescue depends on smoke, but the tribe mocks him. Jack orders Samneric seized; the twins are disarmed and tied. Ralph’s temper breaks and he attacks Jack again as the tribe cheers, pushing the standoff to a crisis.
Piggy raises the conch and appeals to reason: rules versus killing, law and rescue versus destruction. Above, Roger toys with stones, then commits: he leans on a lever, sending a boulder down. The rock strikes Piggy, shattering the conch; Piggy falls to his death into the sea.
Silence breaks as Jack declares himself chief and hurls a spear that wounds Ralph. The tribe charges; Ralph escapes into the forest. Jack regroups the tribe at the fort and turns on the captured Samneric, forcing their submission while Roger advances on them with ominous, unchecked cruelty.
