CHAPTER FOUR
Overview
The boys’ days normalize, but civility erodes: Roger tests boundaries, and Jack’s painted mask unleashes a more ruthless persona. While the hunters secure their first pig, they let the signal fire die, costing a rescue chance. Jack assaults Piggy, and Ralph’s conflict with Jack hardens as Ralph calls an assembly.
Summary
Days settle into a hot, shimmering routine as littluns play and fear the dark, while biguns drift between tasks and idleness. Roger and Maurice trample littluns’ sandcastles; later, Roger furtively throws stones near Henry but holds back, restrained by leftover taboos from home.
Jack experiments with clay and charcoal, creating a painted mask that frees him from shame. He leads hunters, including Sam and Eric, into the forest. Meanwhile, Ralph, Simon, Maurice, and Piggy relax by the pool until Ralph spots a ship on the horizon and races for the mountain signal fire.
They find the fire dead; the watchers are gone. The hunters return triumphant with a pig, chanting. Ralph confronts Jack for letting the fire out and missing rescue. Jack, stung, lashes out—punching Piggy and breaking a lens of Piggy’s glasses—then offers a brittle apology. Tension hardens between Ralph and Jack.
Ralph has the fire relit with Piggy’s remaining lens. The boys roast meat; Jack pointedly withholds Piggy’s share until Simon quietly gives his own, prompting Jack to fling more meat with angry bravado. The hunters reenact the kill with a circling, chanting dance that hints at rising savagery.
As excitement ebbs, Ralph, resentful and determined to reassert order and rescue priorities, announces he will call an assembly with the conch, even into the dark.
