CHAPTER 93

Overview

Silas seeks sanctuary at London’s Opus Dei Centre after separating from Rémy, discarding his gun, and believing his violent mission is finished. His brief sense of refuge collapses when a police caller locates him there through a tipoff and orders that he be kept in place.

The chapter shifts Silas from active pursuer to vulnerable fugitive, while Teabing’s unresolved captivity remains tied to the Teacher’s next decision.

Summary

Silas arrives on foot at the Opus Dei Centre in London after Rémy drops him nearby to keep the limousine away from main streets. Rain soaks Silas, but Silas experiences it as cleansing and feels relieved after following Rémy’s suggestion to wipe down and discard his gun in a sewer grate.

Silas reflects on Teabing, whom Rémy has left bound in the limousine. When Silas earlier asked what would happen to Teabing, Rémy answered that the Teacher would decide, suggesting that Teabing’s fate remains in the Teacher’s control.

At the Opus Dei Centre, Silas finds the door unlocked and is welcomed by a kind numerary who does not react to Silas’s appearance. Silas identifies himself as an Opus Dei numerary and asks to rest there, and the host offers him an empty room along with tea and bread.

Silas goes upstairs, removes his wet robe, prays, eats the food left outside his door, and lies down to sleep. Three floors below, the host answers a phone call from someone identifying himself as London police, asking whether an albino monk is present after a tipoff.

The numerary confirms Silas is upstairs praying. The caller orders the host to leave Silas exactly where he is, say nothing to anyone, and wait while officers are sent over, turning Silas’s refuge into a trap.
