CHAPTER 94

Overview

The Teacher murders Rémy with poisoned cognac after receiving the keystone, eliminating a dangerous accomplice who knows the Teacher's identity. With the cryptex and a weapon in hand, the Teacher moves toward the knight's tomb named in Saunière's poem, narrowing the conflict to the Teacher versus Langdon and Sophie.

At the same time, Bishop Aringarosa arrives in London and learns police activity is centered on the Opus Dei Centre, prompting him to rush toward Silas. The chapter shifts the conspiracy from theft and pursuit into cleanup, betrayal, and the final approach to the Grail clue.

Summary

In stormy St. James's Park, the Teacher meets Rémy in the parked limousine after Rémy has delivered the keystone. Rémy proudly treats the handoff as proof of partnership and imagines leaving servitude behind, while the Teacher confirms that Rémy has wiped down the gun and replaced it in the glove box.

The Teacher offers a cognac toast, but the drink has been poisoned. As Rémy weakens, the Teacher explains that Rémy is the only person who knows the Teacher's face and that Rémy's exposure at Temple Church has made him too dangerous to keep alive. Rémy realizes he is being murdered, tries and fails to fight back or sound the horn, and dies in the car.

The Teacher leaves the limousine, reflecting that Rémy's fingerprints and surveillance work could have led police toward the operation, while the Teacher's own precautions have preserved anonymity. After attending to one final loose end in the rear of the limousine, the Teacher crosses the park with the cryptex and the Medusa revolver, believing that only Langdon and Sophie now remain as obstacles.

The Teacher focuses on Saunière's poem about a knight interred by a Pope and an orb that should be on the knight's tomb. Because of months spent listening to Saunière, the Teacher believes he knows which famous knight the verse indicates, though the exact meaning of the missing orb still needs to be solved at the tomb.

Meanwhile, Bishop Aringarosa lands at Biggin Hill Executive Airport and expects to meet Fache, but a British officer says Fache has left and wants Aringarosa taken to Scotland Yard for safety. When Aringarosa hears the police scanner mention 5 Orme Court, the London Opus Dei Centre, he realizes Silas may be involved and urgently orders the driver to take him there instead.
