CHAPTER 27

Overview

Fache confirms that Sophie helped Langdon evade the GPS trap, transforming Sophie from investigator into suspected accomplice. Concluding that Langdon and Sophie remain inside the Grand Gallery, Fache orders Collet to send in an armed Louvre guard to capture them.

The chapter raises the immediate danger around Sophie and Langdon while showing Fache adapting his pursuit. By splitting his men between the Louvre and Langdon's possible refuge, Fache expands the manhunt beyond the museum.

Summary

Lieutenant Collet, stationed at Saunière's desk, receives a call from Captain Fache and learns that Robert Langdon removed the GPS tracking dot by hiding it in a bar of soap. Collet cannot understand how Langdon discovered the tracker until Fache tells him Sophie Neveu warned Langdon.

Fache says he has heard a recording proving Sophie interfered with the DCPJ operation. Collet realizes Sophie's actions could cost her job and freedom, and he asks where Langdon is now.

Fache reasons through the situation: no fire alarms have gone off, no one has left under the Grand Gallery gate, and the perimeter team saw Sophie enter but never saw her leave. From this, Fache concludes that Langdon and Sophie are likely still inside the Grand Gallery.

Fache orders Collet to send in the armed Louvre security guard stationed at the gate and warns that Sophie may be with Langdon. Fache wants both Langdon and Sophie held at gunpoint before he can return.

After the Trailor truck leaves, Fache regroups his officers. Recognizing that Langdon has become harder to catch with Sophie helping him, Fache divides his forces: half return to the Louvre perimeter, while the others are sent to guard the one place in Paris where Langdon might seek safe harbor.
