Overview
Kamran successfully reaches Alizeh’s attic room while pretending to wander Baz House, but the search turns into a direct confrontation when Alizeh catches Kamran and forces an honest confession. Kamran’s discovery of Alizeh’s carefully tended room deepens Kamran’s guilt and fascination, while Alizeh’s anger exposes the central conflict between Kamran’s attraction to Alizeh and Kamran’s loyalty to the crown. By the end, Kamran denies wanting Alizeh harmed but cannot deny the crown’s involvement, leaving trust between them badly fractured.
Summary
Kamran wanders Baz House loudly and theatrically so the servants will believe he is merely indulging a wistful mood. Once Kamran thinks suspicion has faded, Kamran slips into stealth and climbs toward Alizeh’s isolated attic quarters, reflecting on what Zaal told Kamran: Alizeh is an orphan, a trial servant, and lodged not in the servants’ wing but in an old storage closet.
As Kamran climbs, Kamran imagines Alizeh living in squalor and feels shame at how little Kamran has ever considered the treatment of servants, including those in the palace. When Kamran reaches the door, Kamran apologizes silently for invading Alizeh’s privacy and expects to find misery.
Instead, Kamran discovers a tiny but immaculate room, warm with candlelight, rose petals, color, sewing supplies, a rug, a cot, and carefully arranged possessions. The discovery humbles Kamran because Alizeh has transformed a storage closet into a clean, beautiful refuge, contradicting Kamran’s pitying assumptions.
Kamran notices too late that a candle is burning, and Alizeh surprises Kamran from behind, pressing what Kamran thinks is a blade to Kamran’s throat. Alizeh demands the truth and promises to leave Kamran unharmed if Kamran answers honestly. Kamran admits Kamran has been sent as a spy to search Alizeh’s room for intelligence; Alizeh lowers the weapon, revealing it to be scissors.
Alizeh is partly undressed after washing or changing, and Kamran is overwhelmed by Alizeh’s beauty before obeying Alizeh’s order to turn around while Alizeh finishes dressing. Once dressed, Alizeh tries to send Kamran away, but Kamran insists Kamran confessed only to save Kamran’s life, not to abandon the mission. Their tense exchange reveals that Alizeh knows Kamran is the prince and believes Kamran or the Ardunian crown sent men to kill Alizeh.
Kamran denies personally ordering the attack and says Kamran does not wish Alizeh dead, but Kamran refuses to answer questions that would betray the crown or implicate Zaal. Alizeh condemns Kamran’s divided loyalties and questions Kamran’s honor, while Kamran admits Kamran is bound by aspects of Kamran’s position that Kamran privately detests. Kamran ends by asking Alizeh not to misunderstand one thing: Kamran wishes Alizeh no harm.
