Overview
Alizeh saves Kamran from the fiery arena and exposes her Jinn nature, but the moment turns disastrous when Cyrus reveals that Iblees, not Hazan, has been directing events. Kamran has Hazan arrested, while Alizeh realizes the devil wants to use her as a queen to enact revenge on the Clay.
Alizeh tries to flee, but magical forces and Cyrus’s dragon carry her away from Ardunia. Cyrus finally names himself and reveals the true price of his bargain: Alizeh is being taken to Tulan to marry him and become a queen.
Summary
Alizeh runs through the inferno to reach Kamran, her gown catching fire as she crosses. Kamran is injured but alive, and Alizeh turns on the Tulanian king in fury. When he is astonished that the flames do not burn her, Alizeh realizes he knows she is politically important but not that she is Jinn.
Alizeh slaps the Tulanian king hard enough to send him into a column. He laughs and says the devil did not tell him she was Jinn. When Alizeh assumes he means Hazan, the king corrects her and says their mutual friend is not Hazan, causing Kamran to believe Hazan has betrayed him. Kamran signals the guards, and Hazan is seized while trying to flee.
Alizeh pieces together that Hazan was not responsible for manipulating her fate. Instead, Iblees has been behind the larger plan. The Tulanian king explains that Iblees wants Alizeh to rule, and Alizeh realizes the devil likely means to use a Jinn queen to punish the Clay and spread chaos.
Terrified and seeing that midnight is near, Alizeh flees, apologizing that she must hide from Iblees. Before she can escape, unseen magic lifts her into the air. Kamran calls out helplessly from inside the fiery barrier as Alizeh rises toward the ceiling.
A dragon crashes through the palace wall, scatters the crowd, and breaks the spell holding Alizeh aloft. Alizeh falls, but the dragon catches her on its back and carries her out into the night. Once airborne, the dragon turns invisible, leaving Alizeh seated on a patterned rug and struggling to calm herself.
The Tulanian king suddenly appears on the rug and says the dragon is his. He introduces himself as Cyrus. When Alizeh demands to know where they are going, Cyrus explains they are headed to Tulan because Iblees wants Alizeh to rule, she has no kingdom of her own, and she must therefore come to Tulan to marry him. Shocked, Alizeh falls off the dragon.
