During a violent storm, Kamran waits with Hazan beneath an awning, anxious for the minister’s report about the mysterious servant girl. Hazan returns the bloodstained handkerchief and reveals that Kamran was right to suspect there was something unusual about her, though Hazan delays naming what the Diviners found.

Before Hazan can explain, a figure crashes into Hazan and runs. Kamran follows the disturbance through the rain and sees Alizeh fleeing in panic. Another figure catches her by the arm, and Kamran instinctively attacks the assailant, but the man disappears, revealing himself to be Jinn.

Kamran tries to reassure Alizeh and urges her to remove her wet snoda for safety. Terrified, she runs, slips on the cobblestones, and scatters her packages. Kamran helps her up, gathers her parcels, and notices that her hands are heavily bandaged. When Alizeh opens her eyes, Kamran sees her clearly for the first time and is stunned by her beauty, her silver-blue eyes, and a bruise shaped like a hand along her jaw.

Kamran asks Alizeh who she is, but she refuses to give her name. Overcome by confusion and attraction, Kamran touches her lips, and Alizeh vanishes. Hazan then catches up, finds Kamran shaken in the street, and finally reveals that the Diviners found ice in the girl’s blood.

Hazan explains that only King Zaal knows and that the king has ordered Alizeh’s collection for the following night. Hazan frames Kamran’s discovery as a triumph that may save the empire, but Kamran, unsettled by his encounter and the danger facing Alizeh, lies when Hazan asks whether he saw anyone, saying he saw no one.
