5 Winternight

A white-haired gleeman, Thom Merrilin, arrives at the Winespring Inn complaining of his reception, then quickly charms the gathered villagers with wit and the promise of stories. He pointedly avoids speaking of Aes Sedai and war, needles the boys about their limited travels, and selects Egwene to assist his act, to mixed reactions from Rand, Mat, and Perrin.

Thom gives a brief performance, juggling and proclaiming tales of legendary Ages and heroes. When Moiraine and Lan appear among the onlookers, Thom abruptly halts, treating Moiraine with guarded deference. After she departs, villagers clamor for more, but Thom slips back into the inn as the Village Council emerges with Nynaeve, who pointedly criticizes Bran al’Vere’s priorities.

Bran rebukes Cenn Buie’s carping, and the Council disperses. Tam tells Rand and his friends that news from Ghealdan remains distant and unlikely to touch the Two Rivers, though he insists on arranging watches after Bel Tine. Rand wants to stay for Winternight, but Tam firmly decides they must return to the farm to tend to responsibilities.

As the boys debate volunteering for patrols, Rand refocuses them on the black-cloaked rider. They agree to seek more witnesses before approaching the Mayor. In the stable, Rand notes the distinctive horses of Lan, Moiraine, and Thom. Rand and Tam depart the village; Rand readies his bow, anxious about the rider.

On the road, Tam explains the Council’s approach to calming fears about war and Aes Sedai. He reveals that other youths—Lem Thane and Bandry Crawe—also reported the black rider, convincing the Council something is amiss. Deciding their farm must not be left unguarded, Tam keeps Rand close and urges vigilance as they head home, reassured by the village’s growing awareness and planned watch.
