Overview
Rand returns to The Queen’s Blessing as Whitecloaks begin hunting Two Rivers boys. Master Gill drives them off, and Loial asks to travel with Rand. Moiraine, Lan, Perrin, Egwene, and Nynaeve arrive, reuniting the group.
Moiraine reveals Mat is corrupted by a Shadar Logoth dagger and that Trollocs are massing outside Caemlyn, forcing an urgent plan to leave after she attempts to heal Mat.
Summary
Rand rushes back to The Queen’s Blessing, where Master Gill and Loial hear his account of falling into the Palace garden and meeting Queen Morgase and Elaida. Gill warns Elaida could set the Guards searching the inns within days and urges Rand to leave soon; Loial asks to accompany them to Tar Valon. Outside, Whitecloaks enter the common room, threatening Gill and seeking Two Rivers boys, but Gill, backed by his guards and patrons, bluffs them into retreat.
A maid reports a lady asking for Rand and Mat. Expecting Elayne, Rand instead finds Moiraine, Lan, Perrin, Egwene, and Nynaeve in the kitchens. The Emond’s Field friends share a relieved reunion; Gill warily hosts Moiraine, who casually wards the street against rats and suggests they all go upstairs out of sight.
Upstairs, Mat lies feverish, paranoid, and viciously taunting the others. Nynaeve moves to treat him until Moiraine arrives, hauls her back, and confronts Mat as he tries to slash her with the ruby-hilted dagger. Lan instantly restrains his wrist. Moiraine identifies the blade as from Shadar Logoth and explains its evil has infected Mat, breeding suspicion and homicidal hatred that will soon spread like a plague.
Lan reports Trollocs and Myrddraal gathering around Caemlyn, enough to seal the roads and eventually enter the city. The threat means they must find a way out quickly. Perrin despairs over the harm they bring, but Moiraine counters that dying would help no one. She readies an angreal and orders the others away so she can attempt to heal Mat, warning the danger is urgent and the city is no longer safe.
