Chapter Eleven. Reflection and Target-Setting
Overview
With the incursion closing, Dr Walden restores order amid chaos, shifting control from quarrelling Marshals to school leadership. She moves Nikki, Mathias, and Will into her flat for secure observation, while Laura oversees. Overnight, Walden and Laura reveal formative traumas, reconcile approaches, and tentatively begin a relationship, cementing new trust and coordination.
Summary
Walden emerges from the shrinking incursion to find disarray outside School House: Marshals arguing, a journalist lurking, and students exposed to the cold. She publicly declares the demon dead and the breach closing, and Laura confirms it. Ezekiel releases the perimeter, and the crowd looks for leadership until Headmaster David Bern arrives to manage media and logistics, freeing Walden to act.
Confronting a district Marshal intent on off-site “observation,” Walden invokes safeguarding and DBS rules to block removal of the students. She assigns Laura, as Chief Marshal, to conduct formal observations on campus and relocates Nikki, Mathias, and Will to her flat—Chetwood’s most secure, self-contained space—so they can rest under supervision.
In the flat, Aneeta reunites with the others; the teens decompress, culminating in Will blurting an invitation for Nikki to attend Leavers with him. Walden enforces bedtime and basic care, then joins Laura in the kitchen, where they debrief over tea. Walden discloses her past: as a Chetwood sixth former in 2003 she and her boyfriend Charlie attempted a grand summoning that killed him when Marshals collapsed the incursion to save her.
Laura explains why she chose school security despite the career cost: the Conway family tragedy resulted from Marshal outreach failures; better follow-up might have saved lives. The two reassess each other—Walden acknowledges Laura’s protective stance toward Nikki; Laura remains wary of Walden’s bound Phoenix but accepts the blood‑geas safeguard. They agree on the importance of prevention and offer each other professional support.
After shared respect and gallows humor about career paths, Laura apologizes for an earlier impulsive kiss and asks Walden out. Walden declines the student pub but proposes a London date at half term. Exhaustion finally sets in; Walden retires while Laura remains on duty to complete her observation report, their new trust sealed with a parting cheek kiss.
