Chapter Twenty-Nine. Oathbound
Overview
Kenning arrives alone, oath-drawn to Chetwood, and enlists Todd to cripple the thaumic engines. She confronts the Phoenix-possessed Walden at Charlie’s memorial and survives a brutal duel as the grounds ignite. Todd’s sabotage destabilizes Chetwood, slipping it toward the demonic realm. The Phoenix reveals a hidden anchor—Mark bound to Charlie’s corpse—before Walden briefly surfaces and urges Kenning to cut off her arm to break the binding and save the school.
Summary
The Phoenix’s awareness patrols Chetwood as four Upper Sixth students quietly take the London train, unseen by its territorial perception. Their absence triggers panic at evening registration, and Walden’s oath to Laura Kenning activates, compelling the Chief Marshal to come. Kenning arrives alone, goes first to Todd Cartwright, and together they infer the Phoenix is entrenched in Walden’s body, mind, the school’s institution, and the engines.
Planning to sever those footholds, Kenning takes the Great Key while Todd readies his toolbox for the engine room. The Phoenix chooses to hunt and kill Kenning before sabotage can occur, heading to Charlie Green’s memorial birch—the emotional heart of Chetwood. There the Phoenix confronts Kenning, attempting persuasion before unleashing fire; Kenning’s improved shields and precision demonstrate months of disciplined study.
The duel escalates: Kenning’s flashbangs and dizziness spells hinder, while the Phoenix weaponizes the grounds, raising tremors and siphoning power from Chetwood itself. Grass withers, fires start, and Scrubs begins evacuation as Lilly Tibbett triggers alarms. Kenning presses with her Marshal sword; the Phoenix intensifies the burn, forcing Kenning to fall back under a blazing onslaught.
At the engines, Todd methodically smashes critical components. This strips a major anchor from the Phoenix but also destabilizes Chetwood’s archaic protections; the site begins sliding into the demonic realm. To brace itself, the Phoenix consumes an imp and reveals its clandestine fifth system: a repurposed old array binding Mark Daubery in stasis, coupled to Charlie Green’s long-dead body.
The horror of the revelation cracks the Phoenix’s control. Walden briefly surfaces, urgently ordering Kenning to sever her right arm to break the binding lines inked into her flesh. Trusting Walden’s plea, Kenning strikes at the elbow. Agonized and suddenly loosed, the Phoenix flares free as Walden begs it to hold the school while reality buckles around Chetwood.
