Chapter 49

Overview

Rand wakes wounded east of Falme, tended by Min, and learns Egwene, Nynaeve, and Elayne freed Egwene and have departed with Mat, Verin, and the Horn for Tar Valon. Moiraine reveals two more seals are broken and Rand’s battle blazed across the sky, naming him to the world.

With Loial and Perrin staying and Shienaran soldiers pledging fealty—Masema fervent—Rand abandons hiding and chooses to accept his role and duty.

Summary

Rand awakens under leatherleaf branches, bandaged and in pain, with Min watching over him. She explains they are five days east of Falme and that Egwene, Nynaeve, Elayne, Mat, Hurin, and Verin have left for Tar Valon with the Horn. Rand discovers a second heron branded on his left palm and reels at Egwene’s departure.

Moiraine arrives, stating she did not send Verin and warning that Padan Fain is now a dangerous blend of Fain and Mordeth. She shows Rand his heron-mark sword melted short and confirms his battle with Ba’alzamon raged across the sky, witnessed widely and already depicted in street art.

Moiraine presents shards of two more cuendillar-like seals found in Falme, bringing the total broken to three, and warns that the world reels: Black Ajah has surfaced, Arad Doman and Tarabon teeter, and Cairhien burns. Rand, rejecting Moiraine’s control yet shaken by these revelations, insists he must find Fain but can barely stand.

Supported by Min and Moiraine, Rand reaches camp where Loial and Perrin remain, the Dragon banner flies, and the Shienarans prepare supper. Rand objects to the banner, fearing pursuit, but accepts Loial’s and Perrin’s loyalty. The Shienaran soldiers kneel; Uno offers oaths, and even the hostile Masema pledges fanatically after witnessing the sky-battle.

Pressed by Moiraine to choose between hiding and defending the world at Tarmon Gai’don, Rand weighs Tam’s lost sword, his wounds, and the mounting signs. Accepting that duty is heavier than a mountain, he resolves to embrace his role rather than flee it.
