Chapter 41

Overview

Rand’s party reaches a deserted, Seanchan-ravaged village and quarrels over how to find Fain and the Horn. Ingtar chooses to scout widely while avoiding damane attention. Alone, Rand is confronted by Ba’alzamon, briefly channels dangerously, and refuses an offer of tutelage, underscoring rising stakes and his perilous path.

Summary

Marching through cold rain toward Falme, Rand’s group struggles with misery and uncertainty. Verin refuses to weaken the storm, fearing damane detection. From frightened villagers, they learn of Seanchan brutality and strange beasts. Hurin smells old killing but no sign of Fain.

They find an empty hill village partly destroyed by fire. Inside an abandoned inn, Verin lights fires while Ingtar despairs at the lack of trail and questions Falme as Fain’s destination. Verin asserts Fain went to Falme, but Ingtar rejects relying on cryptic writings, vowing to quarter the countryside until Hurin finds a scent.

Rand proposes riding straight to Falme, citing Fain’s threat against Emond’s Field. Mat, needing the dagger, and Perrin argue Hurin remains their best chance. Verin warns Falme is dangerous and counsels patience. Uno reports the villagers fled with belongings; Ingtar plans to disguise Hurin and others as locals to scout wide without attracting Seanchan notice.

Torn and feeling pulled toward Falme, Rand tries to rest. Ba’alzamon appears in his room with the Dragon banner, declaring fate is closing and offering either eternal death or life with power under the Shadow. Rand seizes saidin and hurls the Power, which the Shadow swallows harmlessly; realizing the risk to his friends and mission, he wrenches himself free of the One Power.

Ba’alzamon claims only he can teach Rand to survive channeling and the coming madness, demanding service. Shaking but defiant, Rand names himself Rand al’Thor, not Lews Therin. Ba’alzamon vanishes, leaving only charred finger marks, proving the encounter’s terrifying reality.
