Overview
Hunter recounts how Arrowsake evolved from an elite counterterror force into a corrupt assassination network that still reaches into his and Rink’s lives through Walter Conrad. In the present, Sue reveals that her death was faked and that she had secretly been recruited by Arrowsake in a support role, which explains why she had to disappear. When Sue insists on staying with Mercer and threatens to go public if cornered, Hunter and Rink make clear that such a move would only get her killed and that protecting her now means open conflict with Arrowsake.
Summary
Hunter reflects on his and Rink’s past in Arrowsake. Both men were selected from elite military units into the covert multinational group, which began as an idealistic force against terrorists and criminal networks but later decayed into an assassination machine. After 9/11, Arrowsake was officially disbanded, yet a darker version later resurfaced under powerful hidden figures, including Walter Hayes Conrad, who still exerts influence over Hunter and has repeatedly pulled both men back into dangerous work.
Back in Sue’s kitchen, Hunter, Rink, and Sue try to talk without drawing attention from neighbors. Hunter asks whether Suzanne Carter might return and discover them, and Sue reveals that she herself is "Suzanne Carter." The identity is a fabricated legend with false online images, created so Suzanne Bouchard could live safely after faking her death in a diving accident.
Rink questions why Sue would need to vanish if she had failed Arrowsake selection. Sue corrects him and says Arrowsake recruited her through different channels, not as a field operative but for her intelligence and support value. This revelation explains why she had to disappear completely: despite Rink’s assumptions, Arrowsake had a real reason to care whether she lived or died.
Sue then urges Hunter and Rink to stop interfering, leave Jason Mercer alone, and let her continue her life with him. Rink refuses because he believes warning Mercer will drag Sue into danger and likely get her killed. Hunter supports Rink’s argument, explaining that if Arrowsake learns she is alive and linked to Mercer, the organization will relentlessly hunt her down.
Sue proposes going to the press and exposing Arrowsake if the group comes after her. Hunter bluntly explains that this would not protect her: Arrowsake could manipulate the media, discredit her, and then arrange her death or a staged suicide once public attention faded. The chapter ends with Hunter recognizing that even warning Sue has already broken the uneasy truce he and Rink maintained with Arrowsake, pushing them toward a direct and dangerous confrontation.
