Overview
Walter successfully uses his dossier and Sue Bouchard’s evidence to force Arrowsake into a truce, ending its immediate campaign against Hunter, Rink, and Mercer. The agreement rescinds the hit on Mercer and protects Wyatt Carling, but it also depends on mutual silence and the threat of public exposure. Even with Arrowsake backing down, the chapter makes clear that Stephen Vincent remains free, leaving the heroes with unfinished grief and one dangerous enemy still outside the deal.
Summary
Hunter explains that the group’s recent moves were meant to destabilize Arrowsake and force its leaders toward negotiation instead of open war. Back at the Florida ranch, Walter handles the talks because Hunter and Rink are too angry over Sue Bouchard’s murder to meet Arrowsake face-to-face. Walter relies on a damning dossier about Arrowsake, along with Sue’s evidence of murders in Sierra Leone, and Harvey Lucas and Raul Velasquez hold digital copies ready for release if Arrowsake attacks again. Hunter sees the coming collapse of Arrowsake as Sue’s lasting, bloodless revenge.
While Walter negotiates, Hunter, Rink, and Mercer wait tensely at the ranch, eating, resting in shifts, and staying on guard. Hunter eventually steps outside and finds Rink on the porch. Rink says this is not the end for Hunter and himself because, unlike Mercer, they cannot simply disappear and abandon their lives. Hunter mentions the possibility of taking over one of Sue’s properties, but rejects the ranch because it is now tied to Sue’s death.
The conversation turns to Sue. Rink admits that he and Sue had time to say what they needed to say before Vince’s men attacked, and he believes they reconciled as friends. Rink also says Sue clearly loved Mercer, and that she looked to Rink before returning Mercer’s affection. Hunter and Rink sit together in silence, both haunted by the memory that the bullet meant for Mercer killed Sue instead.
Later, Walter calls Hunter with the outcome of the negotiations. Arrowsake has agreed to the group’s terms because continuing the fight would endanger the organization more than it would help it. Walter promises to keep the evidence buried as long as none of them are harmed, and Arrowsake understands that copies will be released if anything happens to Hunter, Rink, Walter, or Mercer. As part of the deal, Arrowsake rescinds the hit on Mercer and formally disavows Stephen Vincent.
Walter adds that Arrowsake is already using its influence to clean up the evidence from Sue’s house, Mexico Beach, and the hostage exchange site, which also reduces the legal danger to Hunter and Rink. Vincent escaped before Arrowsake’s cleaners arrived, so he remains loose and dangerous. Arrowsake accepts Spencer Booth’s death as collateral damage, and Walter plans to return Booth’s body so the organization can invent a cover story. Wyatt Carling is allowed to withdraw safely from Arrowsake’s orbit. The chapter ends with Walter saying they must now do right by Sue and remain alert, because Vincent is still an active threat outside the truce.
