Overview

Pinned behind an overturned boat as Vince's gunmen close in, Joe decides he and Sue must escape rather than wait for police and risk a wider shootout. After Sue refuses to abandon her bag, the pair improvise a diversion with a propane canister, letting Sue slip into the trees while Joe draws fire. The staged blast convinces the attackers to converge on the wreck, giving Joe a chance to escape as police sirens approach.

Summary

Joe Hunter and Sue stay behind an upturned boat hull, but Joe quickly realizes the wreck is only temporary cover. Vince's men are closing in through the woods, and Joe judges that waiting for police would risk trapping everyone in a larger gunfight. He reloads, tells Sue they must keep moving, and argues that drawing the attackers deeper into the forest may force them to abandon the chase once law enforcement arrives.

Joe suggests Sue drop her heavy tote bag so she can run faster, but Sue refuses and keeps hold of it. Looking for a way to break contact, Joe first considers setting the boat on fire to attract police, but Sue has no lighter. Then Sue spots a propane canister lodged in nearby debris, and the two decide it might at least create enough noise and confusion to distract their pursuers.

While Sue provides covering fire, Joe crawls out, retrieves the canister, and gets back under the boat without being hit. He then orders Sue to escape the way he came, telling her to run into the trees so he can follow her trail. After Sue slips away with her bag, Joe fires toward an approaching gunman to hold Vince's crew's attention and keep them focused on the wreck instead of on Sue's movement.

Once Joe has backed away from the boat, he shoots the propane canister. The canister does not burst into flames, but it explodes with a loud pop, vents gas, and shifts the unstable boat hull with a crashing noise. The effect makes it sound as if a much larger blast has occurred, and Vince's men rush toward the wreck, apparently thinking Joe and Sue may have blown themselves up.

Using the confusion, Joe retreats deeper into the forest. After putting distance between himself and the boat, he looks back, believes he and Sue have briefly shaken Vince's crew, and hears a police siren getting closer. Joe hopes the approaching authorities will force Vince and his men to flee instead of pressing the attack.
