PRESENT 4: THE FACE OF THE WATERS — CHAPTER 3.

Overview

The Lightfoot has survived its destruction only as a damaged emergency capsule on the planet’s surface, leaving Fabian, Viola, Kern, Zaine, and Artifabian stranded and vulnerable. Fabian rescues the injured Zaine from the quarantine wreck while confronting the alien ecosystem firsthand, and Kern partly restores communications. The chapter ends with two major shifts: Kern has contacted Meshner on the station, and Fabian discovers an apparent city nearby, suggesting the surface holds far more than hostile biology.

Summary

After the Lightfoot is hit, Fabian comes out of a fugue state inside the ship’s transformed crew section, now an emergency capsule on the planet’s surface. Meshner is absent, and Fabian fights panic by reconstructing events: the ship was struck by an overwhelming long-range attack, the crew section survived, and the rest of the vessel is damaged or missing.

Viola, injured with two broken legs, tends to her own breaches while Fabian confirms that the capsule has minimal power and life support. Kern re-establishes limited contact, reporting that the crew section is intact, the quarantine section is nearby but damaged, and Zaine Alpash Vannix is alive inside it. Because Viola cannot move safely, Fabian dons a full hazard suit and leaves the capsule to retrieve Zaine.

Outside, Fabian finds the Lightfoot wrecked on a high plateau with a thin, oxygen-poor atmosphere and strange local life: black, flowerlike organisms in hollows, juveniles or mobile variants, and a vast kite-like creature overhead. At the quarantine pod, Fabian realizes the damaged Artifabian is communicating manually in Portiid signals. Artifabian has rescued an injured, unconscious Zaine but appears to have lost its proper link to Kern and is behaving more like the male Portiid it was designed to imitate.

A tracked drone from the main wreck helps move Zaine back, though it crushes local organisms along the way. When a pneumatic alien predator approaches, Fabian performs a threat display and successfully drives it off. Viola then manages the quarantine procedures, while Zaine and Artifabian are placed in a sealed section for treatment.

As Fabian surveys the wreck and the surrounding terrain, Kern announces that she has orbital drones functioning as relays and can send a signal to the Voyager. Kern also says she has contacted the station and Meshner, alarming the others because Meshner may no longer be himself. Before Fabian can respond, Fabian finally recognizes that the rugged formations upslope are not natural geology but a city, changing their understanding of the supposedly wild surface.
