PRESENT 1: ROAD TO DAMASCUS — CHAPTER 1.

Overview

Generations after Human-Portiid peace on Kern’s World, the joint vessel Voyager reaches a signal-rich system that may contain descendants or successors of old human technology. The crew discovers a shattered artificial water-moon but chooses not to chase it, prioritizing cautious contact with the active inner system.

The chapter also contrasts two efforts to bridge Human and Portiid minds: Helena and Portia’s translation-based cooperation, and Meshner and Fabian’s dangerous neural experiments. A scout ship, Lightfoot, is launched with a mixed crew and a facet of Avrana Kern, shifting the story from observation to first-contact risk.

Summary

The chapter opens with a partially playful, biased retelling of the history that led to the present mission. A Portiid narrator recounts Avrana Kern’s failed attempt to uplift monkeys, the rise of the Portiid spiders on Kern’s World, the arrival of desperate humans from the old civilization, the near-war caused by mutual incomprehension, and the eventual peace created through the evolutionary virus. This shared civilization has now sent the vessel Voyager to investigate faint signals from another former human terraforming system.

Helena Holsten Lain and her Portiid companion Portia are shown testing improved Human-Portiid communication. Helena’s gloves, optical systems, and implants translate Portia’s complex foot-and-palp language into speech-like meaning, allowing Helena to chat with a spider in a way previous Humans could not. Their work represents one route toward closing the remaining gap between the two allied species.

Elsewhere, Meshner Osten Oslam and the male Portiid Fabian pursue a more invasive route to the same goal. Meshner has implants around the back of his head and tries to receive Portiid sensory or memory-like information, but the experiment overwhelms Meshner’s perception and causes a seizure-like collapse. Fabian detects inflammation and swelling in Meshner’s brain, yet Meshner insists they continue, hoping to access the Portiid genetic memories called Understandings.

Avrana Kern interrupts the experiment through the spider-shaped assistant Artifabian and summons the crew to the bridge because Voyager has made a discovery. The ship, having entered a new system and begun waking its crew in stages, has detected dense signals that suggest an advanced, spacefaring civilization using structures related to pre-collapse Earth technology. The crew then observes a huge artificial object: a ruptured, icy, water-filled moon or planetoid, with frozen organic shapes inside and a shattered plume of ice extending from one side.

Captain Portia decides not to pursue the ruined object, because the inner system promises more important contact and may contain a technologically advanced or dangerous civilization. To avoid risking the whole mission, the captain orders Voyager into concealment near an outer planet and prepares an independent scout craft. Helena, Meshner, Zaine, Portia, Fabian, Bianca, and Viola are selected because they have demonstrated Human-Portiid cooperation; participation is formally voluntary but socially pressured, and none refuse.

Meshner and Fabian privately resent being assigned to the scout, believing it may be a punishment for their controversial research, but they also agree they can continue their experiments during the long transit inward. As Kern separates a segment of Voyager and installs a splinter of herself into it, the new scout ship is named Lightfoot. Its first destination will be the system’s largest gas giant, whose moons show signs of activity.
