CHAPTER 38

Overview

Aelin faces the aftermath of Deanna’s possession and Rolfe’s anger, learning through Rolfe’s own history that power can demand devastating personal costs. On the beach, Aelin admits her terror over the gods, the Lock, and the unknown title “Queen Who Was Promised,” while Rowan insists that Aelin’s power does not make her unworthy of love. Their mutual confession and claiming of each other mark a major shift in their relationship, turning fear into partnership and defiance.

Summary

After Skull’s Bay is made safe again, Aelin and Rowan meet briefly with Rolfe. Rolfe demands an explanation for the moonfire that nearly struck his city, and Aelin, exhausted and furious, accepts responsibility for the men lost while also making clear that his alliance with her now makes him powerful and protected.

Rolfe answers by revealing the cost of his own power. As a desperate sixteen-year-old survivor of a shipwreck, he accepted a stranger’s offer of the skills and map that would help him become Pirate Lord. The price was what he valued most: his mother and sister, who vanished at sea while searching for him. Rolfe asks Aelin what the price of her power will be, leaving Deanna’s words and the title “Queen Who Was Promised” echoing in Aelin’s mind.

Aelin runs to an empty beach with Rowan following, needing distance from the city and from her own thoughts. Rowan asks whether Aelin used the Wyrdkey willingly, and Aelin explains that Deanna seized her through it, waiting for the moment Aelin combined the key and her magic. Aelin is shaken by the depth of her power, by the gods’ pressure to find the Lock, and by the fear that she might have killed Rowan when Rowan placed himself between Aelin and the town.

Rowan reassures Aelin that Deanna’s violation and Aelin’s new depth of power do not make Aelin monstrous or unlovable. Rowan insists they will learn to manage Aelin’s power together and that resenting it could cost them the war. When Aelin admits she sometimes wishes someone else could fight, Rowan steadies her with humor, confidence, and his belief in Aelin’s strength.

Their comfort turns into honesty: Aelin tells Rowan that she loves him, and Rowan answers that he loves her without limit. On the shielded beach, they claim each other as equals and lovers, their magic mingling with fire, wind, ice, and lightning. By the end, Aelin feels their bond as both personal refuge and defiance, hoping even the gods understand that she and Rowan now stand together.
