CHAPTER 44
Overview
Aelin loses control of her fire in the night, but Rowan pulls her back and the crisis deepens their bond rather than weakening it. Their conversation confirms that Aelin rejects a political marriage and chooses Rowan as the partner she needs for the war and beyond.
Manon wakes lucid but imprisoned, and Dorian questions her about the magical disturbance, leading her to explain the witches' Yielding. Their tense exchange exposes shared trauma, unresolved hostility, and a dangerous attraction, but Manon remains chained and dependent on her captors' decisions.
Summary
Aelin is trapped in a vision or magical state at the heart of fire, drowning in overwhelming flame until Rowan's voice calls her back. She wakes aboard the ship with real flame pouring from her body, contained only by Rowan's wind and ice. Rowan commands her to breathe and reminds her that fear lets the magic master her; Aelin reclaims control by naming herself and refusing fear.
After the flames subside, Rowan remains panicked and feral because he feared that something had taken Aelin again or that her magic had carried her beyond his reach. Aelin steadies him by giving him a simple task and then confronts his impulse to apologize for his Fae nature. She tells Rowan that she wants him as he is and that his voice led her out of the burning place.
Aelin and Rowan discuss the war, Terrasen's political need for alliances, and the pressure on Aelin to marry for military gain. Aelin argues that there is no time for a distant political marriage and that what she needs is Rowan beside her: someone who will not fear her power or compete with her. Rowan promises that, if they survive, he will face whatever comes as long as Aelin is at his side, and the two reaffirm their love and bond.
Later, Manon wakes in her cabin, clear-headed after a long haze of injury and despair. Still chained, she thinks of escaping, finding Abraxos, seeking Elide, and then tracking her coven, though she remains uncertain what future is left to her. Dorian enters with flame in his hand, having sensed a ripple of power; Manon says it was not hers and explains the witches' Yielding, a final sacrificial release of destructive magic.
Manon and Dorian discuss war, killing, and the horrors committed while Dorian was enslaved by the Valg collar. Manon asks to be freed or at least allowed fresh air, but Dorian refuses and suggests she cooperate with Aelin. Their exchange turns charged and antagonistic, with Manon trying to regain control through provocation.
Dorian leaves, then returns, making clear he will not be taken hostage and insisting on Manon's consent before anything happens. He uses invisible magic to stop Manon from undressing herself, kisses her with calculated gentleness, then withdraws and leaves her chained and furious. The encounter sharpens the dangerous attraction between them while leaving Manon's captivity unchanged.
