CHAPTER 68

Overview

The witch mirror reveals the full cost of Elena’s ancient mistake: Nehemia’s planned death, Brannon’s hidden keys and warnings, and Aelin’s destined role as the sacrifice needed to forge a new Lock. Elena also shows that she once defied the gods to save young Aelin from death, sacrificing her own afterlife to give Aelin time to live.

Aelin accepts that sealing the Wyrdkeys will require every drop of her life and power, reframing her destiny from conquest to self-sacrifice. The revelation ends abruptly when Aelin and Manon return to the shore and find Maeve waiting with Elide hostage, turning private truth into immediate danger.

Summary

Inside the witch mirror, Aelin Galathynius and Manon Blackbeak witness more memories that deepen Aelin’s grief and anger. Aelin learns that Elena and Nehemia knew each other and worked together, and that Nehemia knowingly went to Rifthold to die because her death was meant to break Celaena Sardothien and force Aelin to rise as queen.

The mirror then reveals how Elena’s original failure with the Lock created the burden now falling on Aelin. Brannon quarreled bitterly with Elena, then secretly forged the Amulet of Orynth with Wyrdkeys hidden inside and left Wyrdmark messages, clues, and protections for his true heir. He hid another key in Elena’s tomb, placed the final key at Mala’s temple, and then walked into the molten fire, leaving behind only what might help Aelin survive the consequences of Elena’s bargain.

Elena appears to Aelin and Manon and admits that Aelin, not Dorian, was chosen because Aelin was ready and bore Mala’s power. Aelin realizes that “the Queen Who Was Promised” means she was promised to the gods and the keys: her magic, blood, and life are the price required to forge a new Lock, return the Wyrdkeys to the gate, and seal it forever.

At Aelin’s demand, Elena shows what truly happened after young Aelin fled the massacre of her family and fell into the Florine River. Elena was supposed to take Aelin immediately and force her toward the keys, but Elena hesitated after seeing Aelin fight to live. When Aelin died of cold on the riverbank, Elena defied the gods by reviving her, then guided Arobynn Hamel to find Aelin, knowing the assassin’s care would be dangerous but would keep Aelin alive long enough to grow.

Elena reveals that her punishment for buying Aelin time is annihilation: when the game is finished, Elena’s soul will be destroyed forever. Aelin forgives enough to ask Elena to accompany her when Aelin finds the third key and ends the threat. Elena explains that she sent Aelin to Wendlyn not only for healing but so Aelin would find Rowan and know joy before the debt came due.

As the mirror’s power fades, Elena shows Aelin what must be done. Aelin accepts that she must pay the Nameless price and trusts that the preparations she has made will help Terrasen and the people she loves after she is gone. Aelin and Manon are then cast back into sunlight at the edge of the marshes, far from the sea battle, where Maeve waits among slaughtered guards with Elide Lochan kneeling before her and a Fae blade at Elide’s throat.
