CHAPTER 53

Overview

Aelin’s company nears Mala’s Lock after a grueling trek through the Stone Marshes, but the approach feels ominous and ancient. Dorian’s growing magic and Manon’s recognition of the Eye of Elena reveal a major link between Aelin’s amulet, Ironteeth history, and the Crochan curse. Rowan then learns from Fenrys and Gavriel that Maeve may be maneuvering around Aelin, the keys, Lorcan, and the cadre, raising the threat beyond Erawan alone.

Summary

After two miserable days in the Stone Marshes, Aelin’s group continues toward Mala’s Lock through heat, insects, ruins, and dangerous water. Aelin keeps bugs away with flame, while Rowan and Gavriel heal the group’s bites and cuts because Aelin remains drained from earlier exertions and the Bloodhound’s attack. Rowan scouts ahead as a hawk, and Lysandra searches the waters in an unpleasant marsh-creature form.

As the party pushes onward, Lysandra demonstrates her shifting by taking Fenrys’s form, though her brand remains visible as her tell. The strange sight unsettles Fenrys and Gavriel, but Gavriel helps Lysandra understand the sharper senses and physical changes. Rowan returns and reports that the Lock lies ahead and can be reached by the next afternoon, though the place’s magic reminds him of the Sin-Eater’s temple.

The group camps on a defensible island and shares a rough meal cooked by Aedion. During the meal, old familiarity surfaces between Aelin, Aedion, and Dorian when Aedion teases Dorian about his courtly manners. A marsh beast suddenly lunges at Manon, but Dorian stops it with invisible magic without moving, and Manon chooses to have it released rather than killed.

The attack draws Manon’s attention to Aelin’s Eye of Elena. Manon identifies the symbol not as Elena’s but as the Ironteeth sign of the Three-Faced Goddess, also called the Eye of the Goddess. Manon explains the Crochan curse on the Ironteeth, describing how Rhiannon Crochan’s dying curse turned the Witch Kingdom into a wasteland and forced the Ironteeth into centuries of exile. Manon also reveals that the curse can only be broken by a union of bloodlines, which makes her own mixed Ironteeth and Crochan heritage newly significant.

Later, Rowan keeps watch when Fenrys and Gavriel warn him that Aelin and Manon seem dangerously entwined by ancient forces. They fear Maeve has long waited for someone like Aelin to lead her to the Wyrdkeys and that Maeve may strike after Aelin weakens herself against Erawan. They also reveal Maeve has replaced Rowan in the cadre with the sadistic Cairn and still expects them to kill Lorcan. Fenrys privately asks Rowan to kill him if Maeve ever orders him to harm Aelin, and Rowan silently recognizes the fear and grief beneath Fenrys and Gavriel’s loyalty to Maeve.
