Chapter 33
Overview
Rand orders Mat and the Band to approach near Salidar, collect Elayne, and escort her to Caemlyn, with Aviendha accompanying and potential Aes Sedai joining en route. Mat plans a cautious march. Meanwhile, Egwene confesses her lies to the Wise Ones, submits to punishment under ji’e’toh, earns forgiveness, and readies a dangerous Travel to Salidar through Tel’aran’rhiod.
Summary
Egwene, summoned by the Salidar Aes Sedai, writes a brief, blushing farewell to Gawyn and steels herself for departure. Confronted by Amys, Bair, and Sorilea, she admits deeper lies: entering Tel’aran’rhiod alone, ignoring cautions, and worst, that she is only Accepted, not Aes Sedai. Accepting ji’e’toh, she asks help to meet her obligation.
In a formal gathering of Wise Ones and apprentices whom she deceived, Egwene endures a belt-strapping from each, shamed by her lack of stoicism. When she presents herself again to continue, Amys, Bair, and Sorilea declare her toh met. The women embrace her, restoring honor with smiles; Sorilea counsels courage and promises a place among the Aiel should the Tower reject her, while Bair offers continued dream guidance and news.
Parting, Egwene learns she still owes Rhuarc—and likely Melaine and Aviendha—but resolves to proceed. She readies to attempt entering Tel’aran’rhiod in the flesh to reach Salidar, determined not to yield before the Aes Sedai even if they summoned her harshly.
Elsewhere, Mat plays Snakes and Foxes with Olver when Daerid announces Rand’s arrival. Rand, tense and fever-bright, tasks Mat to take the Band by gateway to a clearing near Salidar, then advance slowly so the rebels are warned. Mat must secure Elayne’s safe escort to Caemlyn for coronation, invite any willing Aes Sedai to join, and draw Dragonsworn under Rand’s banners while crossing Altara and Murandy. Aviendha insists on accompanying to speak with Elayne.
Rand adds that Bodewhin is in Caemlyn with Verin and Alanna, and that Egwene may reach Salidar first; Mat is to help extricate her. He hands Mat a letter for Thom. After Rand departs, Mat sets his captains to prepare, plans a measured approach to avoid alarming Aes Sedai, and warns Aviendha to keep order as she sharpens her knife and pointedly reminds him Aiel women are not easily handled.
