Aviendha delivers weighty Wise One dreams—unseen assassin, three women, a land sundered, and the Bowl—then resolves to meet her toh to Elayne.
Summary
Haunted by Lews Therin’s catastrophic dreams and a golden‑haired woman turning from love to terror, Rand wakes shaken and forgoes breakfast. In Cairhien’s corridor he faces Wise Ones, Berelain, and rival Cairhienin and Tairen nobles. When Berelain notes Mangin’s imminent hanging, Rand refuses to witness, reinforcing that Aiel are not above the law yet making the execution routine.
Announcing an immediate return to Caemlyn, Rand opens a gateway. In the Grand Hall, Alanna’s bond slams into awareness. Sulin publicly chastises him for stepping through first and risking ambush; Rand counters by limiting his in‑palace guard to two, keeping larger guards only outside.
In his rooms, Rand and Aviendha speak. She reports Elayne’s location is unknown, then relays shared Wise One dreams: Rand on a boat with three unseen women and a tilting scale; a man at Rand’s side with a hidden dagger to his throat; Rand cutting the wetlands in two with a sword; and rain from a bowl surrounded by snares, whose key is “the one who is no longer.” Rand interprets some as an unseen assassin and worsening strife, but the Bowl remains cryptic.
Aviendha, conflicted by ji’e’toh, declares she will meet her obligations, especially to Elayne, and leaves after an enigmatic promise to come when he sleeps. Rand wrestles with Lews Therin’s voice and his feelings for Aviendha.
Shifting to Aviendha’s view, she agonizes over her shame and greater toh to Elayne. In the hall, she exchanges barbed handtalk with Maiden Liah, restraining herself to avoid greater dishonor, and departs determined to find a way to meet all her toh.
