Chapter 13
Overview
Nynaeve endures Theodrin’s failed efforts to break her block, while Tarna Feir pressures Elayne and Nynaeve to return to Elaida. Refusing, they enter Tel’aran’rhiod using need and locate a powerful weather-related ter’angreal—the Bowl of the Winds—and a hidden cache in Ebou Dar. They resolve to travel there, potentially altering Salidar’s course.
Summary
Nynaeve undergoes Theodrin’s relentless attempts to break her block, including a dousing meant to shock her into surrendering to saidar. Despite novice-style exercises and a sleepless-night plan, Nynaeve still can only channel through anger. They exchange minor Healings before parting, and Nynaeve heads off hungry and frustrated.
Back in their room, Elayne recounts a chaotic day teaching, handling dangerous mishaps, and managing Moghedien-as-Marigan. Nynaeve argues they should flee to Rand before Salidar turns to Elaida, citing what she overheard of Tarna’s message. Elayne insists they stay until the Hall decides, believing they might influence the outcome and waiting for Thom’s return.
Tarna Feir arrives, icily offers to take Elayne “to the Amyrlin,” then presses Nynaeve alone, revealing her own broken block and urging swift return to Elaida to guide Rand. Nynaeve feigns ignorance and refuses. Shaken, she suspects Tarna knows more than the Hall realizes and that Reds have sympathizers in Salidar.
Elayne secures two dream-rings from Siuan. That night they enter Tel’aran’rhiod using need, landing first in Tar Valon by a guarded storeroom of unknown ter’angreal, then excluding Tar Valon and shifting to a decaying quarter of Ebou Dar. In a dusty storeroom, repeated use of need leads them to a large crystal bowl carved with clouds. Elayne briefly channels into it, confirming it is a weather ter’angreal; she senses additional ter’angreal and even angreal nearby.
Unable to fix exact streets, they identify the city as Ebou Dar and resolve to travel there in the waking world to secure the Bowl and the cache for the Hall—hoping it will sway Salidar. Returning to Salidar, Elayne sleeps, while Nynaeve worries about Theodrin’s looming sessions and their urgent need to depart.
