CHAPTER EIGHT
Overview
Harry and the Weasleys watch the Quidditch World Cup from the Top Box, meeting Winky the house-elf, Cornelius Fudge, the Bulgarian Minister, and the Malfoys. Dazzling mascots enthrall the crowd and spark chaos. In a brutal, fast match, Viktor Krum catches the Snitch, but Ireland still wins. Fred and George collect their bet from Ludo Bagman.
Summary
Harry, the Weasleys, and Hermione reach the immense stadium and are directed to the Top Box. They spot advertisements flashing across the pitch and find a lone house-elf, Winky, saving a seat for her master. Winky disapproves of Dobby’s paid freedom and nervously endures the height to obey orders.
Dignitaries arrive: Cornelius Fudge, the Bulgarian Minister of Magic, and the Malfoys. Tension flickers between Arthur Weasley and Lucius Malfoy, while Percy fawns over officials. Ludo Bagman amplifies his voice to open the final: Bulgaria versus Ireland.
The mascots perform: veela captivate the crowd, affecting Harry and Ron until Hermione snaps them out of it; Irish leprechauns shower gold. The teams are introduced, including Viktor Krum for Bulgaria and Aidan Lynch for Ireland, with Hassan Mostafa refereeing. The match begins at blistering speed; Ireland’s Chasers dominate early.
Krum executes a Wronski Feint that floors Lynch. Fouls escalate; veela provoke distractions and then a field-side brawl with leprechauns. Mostafa, briefly bewitched by the veela, penalizes Bulgaria, further inflaming tensions. Amid relentless play and mounting chaos, Krum’s nose is broken, yet he continues.
Lynch dives for the real Snitch but crashes again; Krum seizes the Snitch regardless, ending the game with Bulgaria 160 to Ireland’s 170. Ireland wins despite Krum’s capture. During the ceremony, the injured Bulgarians and jubilant Irish receive applause; Fudge learns the Bulgarian Minister speaks English. As celebrations continue, Fred and George approach Bagman to collect their winnings.
