Kamran descends to the dungeons, burdened by grief for King Zaal and the turmoil of recent days. He carries Alizeh’s carpet bag and a jarred firefly. Ignoring guards who warn Hazan has displayed dangerous Jinn strength, Kamran clears the room and demands answers.

Hazan, defiant and profane, refuses deference. Kamran reveals the firefly companion and threatens it to force cooperation; Hazan admits the connection but will not bargain. Pressed about Alizeh, Hazan insists he only sought to protect her, not overthrow Ardunia. Kamran counters by revealing Alizeh’s betrothal to Cyrus and her dragon-aided escape.

The news shocks Hazan, who condemns Cyrus. He notices Kamran’s altered face and warns that Diviners may come, because the magic’s distortion signals Kamran’s claim is no longer absolute. Kamran proposes a deal: Hazan’s knowledge in exchange for life, aiming to wage war on Tulan and, if needed, kill Alizeh. Hazan refuses—until Kamran asserts Alizeh is aligned with Iblees, citing cascading calamities.

Weighing prophecy, Hazan links the changed magic to Kamran’s imperiled succession and predicts nobles will convene Diviners to unseat him without swift action. He agrees to help on a strict condition: Kamran cannot harm Alizeh unless Hazan permits. Hazan then displays his full power—rending shackles and the cell door—explaining he stayed because he believed he’d failed her, but now must live to uncover the truth.

The chapter ends with a precarious alliance: Kamran accepts Hazan’s terms, and Hazan warns he will kill Kamran if Alizeh is harmed prematurely.
