Chapter Twelve: Shattered
Overview
Isla’s fear trial reveals that her deepest terror is not death or battle, but returning to a powerless, confined life in Wildling while her realm continues to suffer. Isla escapes the collapsing mirror vision by choosing defiance over surrender, strengthening her resolve to break the curse at any cost.
Although Cleo wins the public demonstration, Celeste and Isla secretly achieve their real objective: collecting the rulers’ essences. The stolen essence gives Isla a practical path toward the bondbreaker by allowing access to protected library sections across Lightlark.
Summary
Isla is pulled into the Starling mirror expecting to confront the fear of failing Wildling through images of dead people, burned forests, and loss. Instead, the mirror places Isla in her own room in Wildling, unchanged from the place Isla left behind.
The room forces Isla to understand failure as a lifetime of confinement. If Isla does not break the curse, Isla imagines returning to a powerless, hidden existence, being used to produce another heir, watching Wildling continue to decay, and losing the freedom Isla has only just tasted on Lightlark.
Isla’s reflection begins acting independently, showing years of isolation, frustration, and deterioration until the reflected Isla becomes empty and lifeless. Then the room itself shrinks around Isla, turning the fear into a physical trap that threatens to make Isla into the same imprisoned version of herself.
When the glass room collapses and pins Isla beneath it, Isla refuses that fate. Isla finds one of her swords by touch, grips it despite injury, and breaks through the glass, escaping the vision and returning to the Hall of Glass.
The demonstration ends without applause, and Cleo is declared the winner. After the crowd leaves, Celeste tells Isla that Isla’s trial lasted only six minutes, though the experience has left Isla deeply shaken and more determined than ever to break the curse or die trying.
Celeste then reveals that their plan has succeeded: the mirror has captured glowing handprints and traces of every ruler’s essence. Using thin gloves, Celeste absorbs the essence marks from the glass, giving Isla the means to enter each realm’s protected library section and begin searching for the bondbreaker.
