Chapter Thirty-seven: Puddle
Overview
Isla uses her starstick to look at Wildling and discovers that her realm has collapsed far more severely than she knew, with Terra already beginning the Wildling death. The sight changes Isla’s purpose: breaking the curses is no longer enough, because only the Centennial’s immense prize might save her people.
Driven by desperation, Isla goes to Oro and reveals her greatest secret: she was born powerless. This confession fulfills the oracle’s warning and shifts Isla and Oro’s relationship into dangerous new territory built on vulnerability, trust, and risk.
Summary
Later that night, Isla uses her starstick despite having once promised herself she would not look at Wildling during the Centennial. She reflects on how much she has changed since arriving: she is bolder, more experienced, and no longer satisfied with only surviving or breaking the curses.
The star-filled puddle reveals Wildling in ruin. Forests have been razed, the palace is nearly destroyed, and villages are empty. Isla moves the vision and finds Terra on the forest floor, already beginning a Wildling death as her body turns to bark, vines, and roots.
Poppy tends Terra with an elixir that can only delay the transformation. Terra says the dirt is dead when she tries to speak to the trees, and Poppy admits that almost all of their people are in the same condition. Isla realizes the land has been powerless too long and is taking powerful Wildlings one by one.
Because the realm is too far gone for ordinary restored Wildling power to save it, Isla understands that merely breaking the curses will not be enough. She remembers that the winner of the Centennial will receive immeasurable ability, and her goal sharpens: she no longer only needs to avoid losing; she must win to save Terra and Wildling.
Devastated, Isla goes to Oro in the Mainland castle and asks whether his earlier offer still stands. After asking if she can trust him, and believing she has no choice, Isla tells Oro the secret that has defined her life: she was born powerless.
Oro is stunned and asks whether Isla has truly never used power. Isla confirms that she cannot use what she does not have. The oracle’s warning that her secret would be revealed comes true, but Isla leaves before facing the full consequences, and Oro does not stop her.
