The Third Tale of Yun Tianming “Prince Deep Water”
Overview
Dewdrop, Auntie Wide, and Long-Sail discover that He'ershingenmosiken bath soap can pacify the glutton fish, allowing them to reach Tomb Island and bring Prince Deep Water back. Deep Water's strange immunity to perspective prevents Needle-Eye from painting him and lets him defeat Ice Sand, ending the usurper's rule.
After Long-Sail burns Dewdrop's portrait and frees her from the umbrella's protection, Dewdrop rejects the throne in favor of a life of travel and stories with Long-Sail. The tale closes with Deep Water positioned to rule and the Storyless Kingdom once again sealed off, while Dewdrop escapes into the unknown.
Summary
At dawn, Princess Dewdrop, Auntie Wide, and Captain Long-Sail see Tomb Island and Prince Deep Water, who appears like a giant from the distant shore. Dewdrop calls to him, but he cannot hear her, and Long-Sail explains that no one has ever been able to cross the glutton-fish-filled sea to the island or return from it.
When Auntie Wide's wooden basin drifts into the water, the group discovers that foam from He'ershingenmosiken bath soap makes the glutton fish passive and lazy. Long-Sail realizes the soap can create a safe path through the sea, so Dewdrop insists on going with him despite the danger. Using a small boat, old oars, and one bar of soap skewered on a sword, they cross while the fish drift harmlessly in the foamy wake.
As the boat nears Tomb Island, Prince Deep Water seems to shrink until he is ordinary-sized, revealing that his apparent giant form is caused by his refusal to obey perspective: he looks the same size no matter the distance. Dewdrop is received by Deep Water, Guardian Shaded-Forest, Royal Tutor Open-Field, and the prince's followers. A blood test proves Dewdrop's identity, she tells Deep Water what Ice Sand has done, and Deep Water immediately decides to return.
The group crosses back through the foam and encounters Ice Sand's cavalry on the shore. The soldiers admit they were ordered to kill Dewdrop but hesitate because they know Ice Sand is a usurper, so Deep Water proposes that he and Dewdrop return to the palace to confront him. At the palace, Ice Sand sends Needle-Eye to paint Deep Water, but Needle-Eye fails because Deep Water cannot be captured by Western perspective. Ice Sand then faces Deep Water in a duel, misjudges distance for the same reason, and is killed.
While Deep Water defeats Ice Sand, Long-Sail finds Needle-Eye's studio. Needle-Eye has vanished into a self-portrait, leaving behind the portraits of his victims, including Dewdrop's. Long-Sail burns Dewdrop's portrait, freeing her from the threat so she can close Ethereal's umbrella unharmed. Dewdrop then tells Long-Sail she will not accept the crown because Deep Water is better suited to rule and she longs for stories beyond the Storyless Kingdom. Long-Sail agrees to sail with her, and the next morning the two leave together on a white-sailed boat, taking the last soap and cutting the kingdom off again from the outside world.
