Post-Deterrence Era, Year 2 The Morning After the Great Resettlement, Australia

Overview

Cheng Xin learns that Gravity has activated the universal broadcast, exposing Trisolaris and, by implication, the Solar System. The Trisolarans abandon their invasion plans, withdraw their fleet and droplets, and order the evacuation of Australia, ending the immediate occupation crisis.

The victory is also catastrophic: Earth is no longer merely conquered but marked as a doomed target in the dark forest. Cheng Xin receives the news with shock and sorrow, recognizing that others carried out the action she could not.

Summary

On the morning after the Great Resettlement in Australia, Cheng Xin hears voices from the information window near the city government tent. Sophon is speaking with others, but Cheng Xin is too far away to understand the announcement. The surrounding crowd suddenly falls silent, making the world seem frozen to Cheng Xin.

The silence breaks into overwhelming cheers. Because Cheng Xin is blind and disoriented, the noise first feels to her like a tsunami swallowing Australia. As Cheng Xin recovers enough to listen, Cheng Xin hears the names “Blue Space” and “Gravity” repeated throughout the crowd.

A man sent by the mayor approaches Cheng Xin and tells Cheng Xin that everyone is preparing to leave Australia and return home. Cheng Xin bitterly answers that Cheng Xin has no home, remembering Cheng Xin's parents and the life Cheng Xin lost centuries earlier. The man then explains the cause of the celebration: Gravity has initiated the universal broadcast.

The man says Trisolaris's location has been exposed, which also exposes the Solar System. As a result, the Trisolarans are fleeing, the Second Fleet has turned away from Earth, and the droplets are gone. Sophon has announced that invasion is no longer a concern because both Trisolaris and the Solar System have become doomed places others will avoid.

Cheng Xin asks whether Blue Space was responsible, but the man says no one knows the details, not even Sophon. He says Trisolaris received the broadcast and that it was initiated a year earlier, when deterrence failed. Sophon has ordered the Earth Security Force to help evacuate Australia, a process expected to take three to six months, though Cheng Xin can leave earlier.

Cheng Xin asks to be left alone. The man tells Cheng Xin that Cheng Xin should be happy because others did what Cheng Xin needed to do. As the crowd disperses and morning sunlight reaches Cheng Xin's face, Cheng Xin stands in the emptied space, feeling like a lone survivor after a flood.
