Overview
Immediately after Cheng Xin becomes Swordholder, Trisolaran droplets launch a precisely timed strike on Earth’s deterrence infrastructure. Cheng Xin discovers that her identity as a protector prevents her from pressing the switch that would trigger mutual dark forest exposure.
The chapter ends with the gravitational wave broadcast system destroyed and dark forest deterrence terminated. This failure transforms Cheng Xin’s election from a hopeful transfer of responsibility into a catastrophic turning point for humanity.
Summary
Minutes after Cheng Xin accepts the Swordholder switch from Luo Ji, the Deterrence Center enters its highest alert. Six strong-interaction space probes, or droplets, are detected just inside the advance-warning zone: one heads toward the Earth-Sun L1 point, while five head toward Earth at tremendous speed. Cheng Xin immediately understands that she does not need more data; the crisis she had prepared for intellectually has arrived in a form she had never truly believed possible.
Cheng Xin realizes that her fundamental mistake is also the reason humanity chose her. Cheng Xin has always imagined herself as a protector who would preserve balance until Earth and Trisolaris no longer needed dark forest deterrence. Instead of engaging her in a strategic contest, the enemy has moved the moment Luo Ji relinquished control, attempting to smash the entire deterrence system before Cheng Xin can act.
As the droplets close in, Cheng Xin is overwhelmed by blankness and then by a vision of Earth’s deep history. She imagines the planet’s ancient crust, the origin of life, the billions of years of evolution, the rise of humanity, and the countless living eyes of all species and generations pressing upon her. The red switch becomes the point at which 3.5 billion years of life would either be sacrificed or spared.
When the warning system reports that the droplets are near the Moon and aimed at the gravitational wave broadcasting stations, Cheng Xin faces the true choice: press the switch and expose both worlds to dark forest destruction, or refuse and allow Trisolaran forces to end deterrence. Acting from an instinctive, deeply rooted refusal to destroy life, Cheng Xin screams and throws the switch away.
The droplets do not attack Cheng Xin. Instead, they penetrate the crust and destroy the North American, European, and Asian gravitational wave transmitters, while suppressing the solar radio-amplification function. After the quake subsides, the Deterrence Center reports that the gravitational wave universal broadcast system cannot be recovered. Dark forest deterrence has been terminated.
