Chapter Forty-Seven

Overview

Nesryn and the badly wounded Sartaq are driven through the Dagul pass by the kharankui until Sartaq becomes trapped and is seized. Before being taken, Sartaq confesses his love for Nesryn, turning the failed escape into a devastating emotional loss.

Nesryn then realizes the spiders may keep captives alive before feeding, so she shifts from fleeing to deliberately letting herself be captured. By hiding Falkan and feigning helplessness, Nesryn gambles everything on reaching the kharankui lair and possibly saving Sartaq.

Summary

Nesryn and Sartaq continue through the narrow pass between the twin peaks of Dagul, searching for a way upward where Kadara might reach them. Webs block parts of the route, and Sartaq’s injuries worsen, but Nesryn keeps Falkan hidden because revealing his ability too soon could destroy their last advantage.

As hours pass and daylight fades, Nesryn realizes the kharankui have likely trapped and herded them deeper into the pass. Sartaq grows weaker from blood loss and thirst, and the smooth rock walls offer no escape route for an injured man who can barely stand.

In a tight passage, Sartaq becomes wedged between the rocks. Nesryn tries to pull him free as the spiders close in behind them, but Sartaq stops struggling and urges Nesryn to run. Before he is taken, Sartaq tells Nesryn that he loved her before meeting her, calling her Neith’s Arrow and wishing they had been given more time.

The kharankui rip Sartaq away, and Nesryn continues forward in grief. As she runs, Nesryn remembers the spiders’ words about taking both captives back to their home, which suggests Sartaq may still be alive for a time. That possibility changes Nesryn’s goal from escape to infiltration.

Nesryn stops, hides Falkan again, and whispers a plan to him. When the kharankui catch up, Nesryn pretends to be exhausted and injured beyond resistance. The spiders surround her, mock her, and finally pin her down as they begin wrapping her in silk, apparently taking the bait.
