Fireheart
Overview
The chapter shifts away from Antica to a captive princess called Fireheart, who has been drugged and sealed inside an iron coffin by an ancient queen. When the coffin is opened, the queen and her huntsman force the chained princess awake, transforming her hidden imprisonment into the beginning of a more direct torment.
This scene reframes the broader conflict around a powerful captive whose survival and resistance may matter as much as the armies now sailing north.
Summary
A captive princess lies sealed in darkness inside an iron sarcophagus, wrapped in iron and kept unconscious by sweet smoke fed through hidden airholes. The coffin is described as a trap built by an ancient queen, a prison meant to contain someone associated with sun, flame, and power.
While drugged, the princess drifts through dreams of sea, darkness, and fire. Her identity feels stripped away until she is only a nameless “princess of nothing,” sustained by a song shared with the darkness and flame around her.
The confinement ends when the coffin is opened and bright light and rain-scented air rush in. The princess cannot fully feel the outside world because a death-mask remains chained to her face.
An ancient queen with dark hair, pale skin, and a cruel smile looks down into the coffin and declares that the princess is awake. The queen’s scarred huntsman reaches in, seizes the princess’s chains, and drags her upright despite her desire to retreat from her body and back into the fading dream-state.
Held helpless before the queen, the princess faces the start of a new ordeal. The queen coldly says, “Let’s begin,” signaling that imprisonment has given way to interrogation, torture, or some deliberate breaking of the captive.
