Chapter Fifty-One
Overview
Borte, Yeran, Kadara, and a force of ruk riders arrive in time to rescue Nesryn and Sartaq from the kharankui. Their coordinated attack turns the pass into an inferno, destroying the spiders' webs and marking a decisive counterstrike against the threat in the Dagul Fells.
The rescue also confirms the strength of Sartaq's people and their bonds, while Nesryn and Sartaq's shared smile underscores the deepening emotional connection forged through survival.
Summary
Borte and Arcas dive back into the Dagul pass, attacking the kharankui while blood leaks from the spider who has been holding the enemy back. Kadara arrives with two other ruks, and Sartaq reacts with overwhelming relief when he sees one of the riders: Yeran.
Sartaq tells Nesryn not to fear the drop as a ruk closes in. The bird seizes Nesryn and Sartaq in its talons and lifts them into the night, with Kadara falling in behind to guard their escape despite the blood on her feathers.
As Nesryn looks back, Borte and Yeran rise from the pass, and Yeran's ruk carries a limp dark form away from the fighting. Borte then lights and fires a flaming arrow into the sky, using it as a signal to the gathered ruk riders.
Hundreds of ruk riders answer with flaming arrows, raining fire onto the webs and trees of the Dagul Fells. The flames spread through the kharankui territory, filling the peaks with smoke and screams as the ruks turn northward.
In the air, Nesryn sees the full extent of Sartaq's injuries and exhaustion, but he manages to smile at her. Nesryn smiles back, holding on to the moment as the Dagul Fells burn behind them.
