Chapter 6

Overview

Nezha rescues and recruits Rin’s crew to the Dragon Warlord’s Hesperian-backed fleet. Yin Vaisra reveals plans to overthrow Daji and found a republic, arguing Moag would have betrayed them. Faced with limited choices, Rin edges toward alliance while securing her team’s safety. Kitay resists and is imprisoned after a disastrous meeting.

Summary

Nezha frees Rin aboard the Hesperian warship Seagrim and insists he meant no harm during the opium assault, claiming it was the least violent way to extract her from Ankhiluun. Rin demands assurances for the Cike’s treatment before agreeing to meet Nezha’s father. As they approach the massive paddle‑wheel warship, Nezha explains the technology and how he survived Mugenese captivity.

Captain Eriden searches Rin and threatens retaliation if she endangers the Dragon Warlord. Inside, Yin Vaisra—Nezha’s father—greets Rin and reveals he has been hunting for her. He outlines a plan to depose Daji, dismantle the Warlord system, and establish a republic with a powerful Hesperian-armed navy. He argues Moag would have sold Rin out and that only his resources can deliver her revenge.

Rin resists taking orders and questions Vaisra’s motives, but the strategic logic is compelling: the Empire is fractured, the Dragon Army controls the waterways, and a coup now could succeed quickly. Vaisra sets a dawn deadline for her decision. Rin consults the Cike; they debate risks, acknowledge Moag’s betrayal, and Chaghan concludes refusal means death—making “join or die” the practical choice.

Nezha provides Rin secure quarters, signaling tentative acceptance. Rin then has the crew retrieve Kitay. His audience with Vaisra collapses; enraged over the attack on his home and fearful for his family in the capital, Kitay rejects the rebellion and quarrels with Nezha and Rin. After throwing food at Vaisra, he is escorted below and, still defiant, asks to be sent to the brig.
