Chapter 19

Snow halts the Republican Fleet at the river for New Year. Rin, Kitay, and Nezha share a meager tangyuan and debate whether shamanic armies or arquebuses define future warfare. When Rin wanders into the trees, she finds villagers frozen where they fell, likely fleeing the Republican advance and succumbing to winter. The sight forces Rin and Kitay to confront that they are now aggressors, not liberators.

As storms persist, Jinzha resolves to bypass Baraya and seize Boyang despite Kitay’s warnings about winter and an Imperial presence. Lanterns over the main channel prove booby-trapped; Kitay diverts the fleet into a narrow secondary pass. Hidden mines or charges in the water detonate, shredding ships and sowing chaos.

At the height of the bombardment, water rears into a protective ring around the Griffon. Rin sees Nezha at the center, eyes tinged cobalt, holding the water until he collapses. With the waves threatening to crush the ships as Nezha loses control, Rin orders opium from her bunk and forces it down his throat, severing his connection to the god and quieting him.

Under Dr. Sien’s care, Nezha survives, and Rin keeps vigil. Later, amid funeral pyres for the many dead, Sister Petra delivers a benediction while Augus explains Hesperian beliefs. When Rin confronts Nezha in private, he denies being a shaman, insists he doesn’t want the power, and fears losing control, even as Rin urges him to train and use it.

The chapter closes with the fleet crippled, morale shaken, and leadership strained: Jinzha’s pride drives risky strategy, Rin recognizes the war’s civilian toll, and Nezha’s unwilling revelation introduces a volatile, unmastered power that could decide the campaign—or destroy them.
