Chapter 28
Overview
As Arlong braces for the Navy at Red Cliffs, Rin arms herself with twin swords. Southern Warlords secretly urge her to defect and lead a southern revolt; she refuses, preserving Republican unity. After a bitter exchange with Kesegi, Rin kills a Hesperian soldier raping a Nikara girl, risking catastrophic fallout with the Consortium.
Summary
With the Imperial Navy forty-eight hours from the Red Cliffs, Arlong races to complete defenses. A blacksmith forges Rin two light, long-reach swords from rare ore; she embraces the blade over Altan’s trident, prioritizing survival over legacy.
Kesegi lures Rin to a clandestine meeting with southern Warlords Gurubai, Charouk, and Takha. They denounce Vaisra and the Hesperians, propose defecting to raise a southern army, and argue Rin’s heritage and fame could rally tens of thousands. Rin calculates that defection is suicide and that she would lose protection from the Hesperians; she rejects them, calling their bluff as they cannot leave without her.
Rin escorts a resentful Kesegi back toward the camps. He confronts her for abandoning the family and never writing, blaming her for wars that trapped them. Rin cannot defend herself and presses on in silence.
Near the Hesperian quarter, Rin discovers a Hesperian soldier raping a Nikara girl. She subdues him, burns his genitals with the Phoenix’s fire, and watches him die. Aware the burns identify her, Rin realizes this killing could provoke severe Hesperian retaliation and jeopardize the Republic’s alliance.
Rin helps the girl regain composure, then leaves with the dead soldier hidden from immediate discovery, fully aware that her choice—born of rage and justice—may carry grave strategic consequences on the eve of battle.
