Chapter 34
Overview
Mische, Asar, and Luce enter the false Citadel, where Mische’s memories of Atroxus’s holy seat twist into images of guilt, violence, and betrayal. The Sanctum turns personal shame into an attack, exposing Mische’s sins and the dangerous emotional bond forming between Mische and Asar.
Ophelia reappears in a more degraded, shadow-bound form and targets Mische after sensing Asar’s mark on her. Ophelia’s accusation that Asar ruins those who love him reframes the chapter’s danger as both supernatural and emotional before Ophelia drags Mische into the darkness.
Summary
As Mische, Asar, and Luce approach the false Citadel, Asar notices Mische’s unusual silence and tries to draw her out with awkward humor. Mische insists she is only tired, but Asar’s concern unsettles her because their recent blood exchange and intimacy have deepened feelings she does not want to face in a place built from shame, desire, and memory.
The Citadel’s entrance appears exactly like Mische remembers from her life in Atroxus’s service: white stairs, golden doors, Atroxus’s symbols, and a statue of the god above the entry. The sight pulls Mische into memories of meeting Atroxus as a child and believing him divine perfection, but the memory is poisoned by guilt and by the fear that the Sanctum will weaponize her past.
Inside, the atrium reproduces the Citadel’s grandeur, but the layout has changed into a single ominous path. Asar tells Mische to draw his sword, and although Mische dislikes weapons, the blade feels disturbingly natural in her hand and draws a pulse of shadow from her magic. The halls are unnervingly empty, unlike earlier Sanctums where wraiths and souleaters gathered around Alarus’s magic.
As the group continues, the Citadel’s tapestries shift from images of Atroxus’s mercy to scenes of divine violence, including Alarus’s beheading and Nyaxia’s grief. Mische pauses at a strange image of a silhouetted figure, bodies, and a cracked sun, then notices darkness writhing near the ceiling. A distant wail resembling Chandra’s final scream confirms the danger is real.
Black hands begin emerging from ceilings, walls, floors, and beneath tapestries that now depict Mische’s sins: cutting down a vampire corpse, spending time with a vampire prince, refusing Chandra’s plea, and sharing blood with Asar. As Mische, Asar, and Luce flee, Ophelia manifests from the shadows and blocks their path, her form increasingly dissolved into the darkness.
Asar tries to reason with Ophelia, but Ophelia turns her attention to Mische, touching her and revealing flashes of Ophelia’s lost life and love for Asar. Smelling Asar on Mische, Ophelia becomes furious and warns that Asar is a regret to everyone who loves him. Ophelia declares she is only one of Asar’s ghosts, then drags Mische down as Asar shouts.
