Chapter 15

Overview

Mische and the group enter the Sanctum of Breath, a deeper and more unstable level of the Descent filled with wraiths, shifting landscapes, and souleaters. Their attempt to remain unnoticed fails when a wraith recognizes Chandra, forcing a dangerous flight into the temple.

Mische survives a near-death attack by channeling Asar’s darkness through their magical connection, deepening the mystery of her power. The chapter ends with a major threat or revelation as the supposedly wraith-filled temple is empty and an unknown woman from Asar’s past emerges from the dark.

Summary

Mische, Asar, Elias, Chandra, and Luce reach the damaged gate to the Sanctum of Breath, the second level of the Descent. The arch is cracked and bleeding, and Asar warns that there will be no path on the other side, only a fall. To keep the group together, Asar binds them with shadow and has them enter as a chain.

The group falls into a dusty, bone-walled realm beneath layered red rivers. Asar urges speed because wraiths will soon notice them. Mische asks what the Breath relic might look like, and Asar explains that Breath represents the essence of life, movement, heartbeat, and connection. When they emerge onto high bridges, Mische sees a constantly changing landscape and realizes it reminds her of being Turned: trapped between life and death while the world moves on without her.

As the group travels through the maze, wraiths gather around them, drawn to their life, especially Chandra’s human mortality. Asar orders everyone to ignore the dead because acknowledgment gives the wraiths power. The party reaches sight of the temple, a bone structure marked with Alarus’s eye, but it is surrounded by souleaters: huge, black, reptilian beasts that consume wraiths and have multiplied because the Descent’s safeguards are failing.

The party tries to cross the open ground quietly and calmly, but a wraith woman recognizes Chandra and grabs her. Chandra panics, Elias’s sword passes through the wraith, and Mische struggles to summon flame before Asar destroys the wraith with magic. The disturbance draws the attention of the souleaters, forcing the group into a desperate sprint toward the temple doors as wraiths swarm and beasts begin to descend.

Luce, Elias, and Chandra make it inside, but Mische trips just before the entrance and nearly falls into a souleater’s impossibly empty jaws. Asar calls to her, and Mische instinctively seizes the connection to his magic, unleashing a blast of darkness that drives the beast back. Asar pulls her inside, shaken, and tells Mische the power was hers.

Inside the temple, the group finds no wraiths despite expecting them to gather around Alarus’s lingering power. The temple itself seems alive, breathing through its walls, until the breathing abruptly stops. Darkness and rancid magic swallow the light, shadow coils around Asar, and an unknown woman emerges, addressing him with intimate familiarity and saying she knew he would return because he was always loyal.
