Chapter 41
Overview
Mische and Asar reach the doorway to the Sanctum of Soul after an exhausting final stretch through the Descent. Asar reveals that the toll of the journey has weakened him enough that Mische must help perform the resurrection ritual, intensifying the danger of Mische’s concealed plan to betray him. Before entering, they share a quiet farewell in a field of red poppies, acknowledging the hope and love they have given each other before stepping into the final Sanctum.
Summary
Mische, Asar, and Luce continue their exhausting march through the Descent as the landscape changes from silver trees to white dunes and ghostly grasslands. Mische and Asar remain painfully aware of each other, but Mische keeps emotional distance because Atroxus’s threat against Asar prevents Mische from revealing the bargain or her intended betrayal.
During the journey, Asar repeatedly pushes Mische to practice Shadowborn magic. When Mische struggles, Asar recognizes that Mische is holding back and finally admits why the practice matters: Asar has been weakened by the Descent and will need Mische’s help to conduct Alarus’s resurrection ritual. Mische realizes this will force her to share magic and intimacy with Asar while preparing to betray him by using Alarus’s arrow, but Mische still refuses to confess because Asar would suffer Atroxus’s punishment.
As the Descent grows unnaturally still, Asar senses that they are close to Soul. After another day of travel, they crest a hill and discover a field of vivid red poppies in the gray underworld, with a doorway standing at its center. Asar identifies it as the passage to the Sanctum of Soul, the boundary between the Descent and the underworld.
Rather than rush through, Asar asks Mische to sit with him among the flowers. In the peaceful pause, Mische thinks of Raihn and the adventures Mische once wanted to tell him about, though Mische doubts there will be any chance to return. Asar asks what sunlight feels like, and Mische describes it as warmth, safety, hope, and the promise of a better future.
Asar tells Mische that Mische has given Asar those things and that Mische has succeeded in the impossible mission of bringing light to vampires. Mische recognizes the moment as a goodbye, tells Asar that Asar will be an incredible king and makes the world better, then kisses Asar with the truth Mische cannot speak aloud. After lingering in the poppy field, Mische and Asar gather their weapons, share one final kiss, and pass through the doorway into the final Sanctum.
