CHAPTER VI: OUT OF THE FRYING-PAN INTO THE FIRE

Alone beyond the Misty Mountains, Bilbo debates returning to the goblin tunnels but overhears voices and discovers Gandalf and the dwarves. Still wearing the ring, Bilbo startles them by appearing unnoticed, earning sudden respect—especially from Balin. Bilbo recounts his escape from Gollum, omitting the ring, while Gandalf explains the goblin gates and their flight through the lower exit.

Warned that goblins will hunt at night, Gandalf urges haste. Hunger and a treacherous scree-slope batter the company before they descend into dark pines. Wolf howls close in, and at Gandalf’s command all climb trees. Dori helps Bilbo up just as Wargs fill the glade, surrounding and guarding each tree.

Gandalf overhears the Wargs’ plan to raid woodmen villages with goblin help and realizes their peril: goblins can climb or fell trees at dawn. He hurls enchanted, multicolored fire-cones that ignite wolves and cause chaos, but fleeing, burning wolves set the dry forest ablaze. Goblins arrive, corral the fire around the trees, and taunt the trapped company with a cruel song as flames lick the trunks.

As Gandalf prepares a desperate leap, the Lord of the Eagles swoops down and seizes him. More great eagles scatter goblins and snatch the dwarves; Bilbo barely escapes by grabbing Dori’s legs. They ascend into the cold night as the grove erupts in flame, and are set down on a high mountain eyrie.

On a broad rock shelf, Gandalf and the eagle-lord—old acquaintances—parley. The eagles, hostile to goblins yet wary of men’s bows, agree to bear the company partway toward the plains but not near settlements. They bring fuel and game; the famished travelers feast. Bilbo, exhausted yet safe at last, sleeps deeply, dreaming of home.
